Best RFC side 1976 - 2006

B: Malthouse, Gaspar, Bourke
HB: Keane, Jess, Deledio*
C: Wood, Raines, Rioli
HF: Bartlett, Richardson, Monteath
F: Cloke, Roach, Wiley
R: Lee, Rowlings, Weightman
I: J.Bowden, Knights, Hart (still have him even in 1976/7), Campbell.

* This kid as we all know is a one in a generation type player - we have had only two others in the last 30 years - Richo and Hart.

In reading this thread it ocurred to me how much our side has missed quality hard defenders like Jess and Bourke, Jess at CHB in particular, and we have missed them for so long.
Damn but it must be over a decade since we have had an absolute quality player at CHB.

You're right on the money there, Bretts. It was one of my Dad's great complaints. He saw the great sides of the 60's and 70's and he used to always say that what they needed was a quality CHB. I guess to a certain extent it goes to prove that they're a very hard player to find and develop.

Craigo, you've still missed the king of duds; remember the other gun Collingwood recruit: one Athos Hrysoulakis?

B:  Sheeds St.Francis Gas
HB:Merv Ghost J.Bowden
C:  Wood Rioli G.Raines
H.F:Rowlings Richo Knighta
F:   Flea Roach Cloke
Foll:Lee Wiley K.B
INT: Campbell Free Benny Monteath

Sorry Kevin Sheedy must be in every side.
Preimership player,State player,Club captain and best and fairest, life member.

Sheeds is a classic example of the type of player who starred for us in earlier days but who would struggle to get a kick in the modern game.

If I were asked to nominate a player on our current list who is most like Sheeds in terms of skill, that player would be Krak.

While I have the highest regard for what he achieved ... looking at the players I named in the pockets, Brown and Deledio, well I would have to say that one of the greatest of his era would be lucky to get a touch. :-\

Just looked at 2 criteria:

1. What they achieved while at the RFC & when.
2. Service to the club.

B: Malthouse, Gaspar, Bourke
HB: Keane, Jess, Free
C: Wood, Raines, Campbell
HF: Bartlett, Rich'son, Wiley
F: Cloke, Roach, Rowlings
R: Lee, Rioli, Weightman
I: B.Gale, J.Bowden, Monteath, Knights
E: Broderick, Rogers, D.Kellaway
2E: Lambert, Egan, Turner, Mitchell, Hogg, M.Pickering

Note:
1. By 1976, Royce was gone. He retired mid-1977.
2. The fact that Jess walked into CHB, and that it was very close b/w Gaspar & Turner says alot for our defensive recruiting over 30 years.

I have been more romantic than truthful. :-X Have to say that I have some difficulty believing that some of our 8o's stars would get a kick today??

In today's environment, our 80's stars would have been even better.

Just looked at one criteria the best RFC side.

I would say that a few more hard,in and under players of Sheedy's ilk may have the Tigers lose there soft image.
Sheedy won the ball consistantly in a time when umpires would not protect players anywhere as much as today.
Brown is a fine player, but he really only came for the cash.
As for comparing him with Krakour, thats like comparing Mike Tyson to Danny Green.More of a Coughlan type from memory. ;)
