Big name retirement/Honouring Darren Gaspar [Merged]

why did you undersize the bit where gaspar was upset, afraid someone might notice?

Um, I believe that was to communicate that he was a little upset.

yeh and gaspar has 2 more all-australian honours than mal michael

and michael has 3 more premierships than gaspar

blah blah blah

Yeah, hence the qualification stated in the original post that brownlow votes may not be the ultimate measure. Interesting nonetheless.

You must be tired from pushing that barrow.

All of those players except Pert and Scarlett have more premierships than Gaspar, people often confuse individual performance and team success. Top players at struggling clubs are put under a more powerful microscope as people search for reasons why the team isn't winning. I'm sure that if e.g. Richo had played in a top side, people would focus more on his assets and tend to excuse his weaknesses.

Some great tributes on this thread, even from some perennial Gas critics who despite this were gracious enough to acknowledge a wonderful career from a man who has been a Tiger from boyhood.

Changes for Darren like fatherhood and career upheaval will perhaps be a challenge, but then again he's aways been (it seems to me) to be the type who goes about his business quietly and without fanfare.

He did say in the press conference he isn't one for much fan fare, if you have a chance to watch it it is quite insightful and better than reading anything that has been written in the papers, as you can see exactly the context he (Miller and Wallace) was saying things in.

im happy to acknowledge that Gas has acheived what only about 3% of footballers have in dual AA honours, club B&F honors and 200+ games at the pinnacle level...........stuff I could only dream of while hacking away at local level for 17 years.

So whilst im not unhappy at the decision(s) of both parties, I'd like to applaud Gaspars acheivement in the game of AFL footy.

Agree with this. Congratulations on a fine career. Sure you had some shortcomings (which player doesn't?) but no one can say that you didn't make the most of your abilities. For this you should be proud!

200+ Games is a milestone and one he should be proud of.

But the cynic in me wonders if he could have reached 200+ games playing for anyone but Richmond.
