Billy Barrott Highlights

Brings a tear to my eye. My boyhood hero.

My first duffel coat had Billy 24 Barrot on the back. Our first rockstar footballer

Bourke, Barrot, Clay. Barrot drop kicks were impressive. 67 flag I was slightly young but 69 I had the job of putting the flag stuff, from the newspaper on the classroom wall. Take down the moon landing stuff. My mum was fill in teacher.. thanks mum.

I got to grand finals 72 to 74, devo'd with the Ian Stewart trade. Would've been great if Rick McLean won a flag too.

The team GR put on the ground was impressive. Local boys, Green, Jewell, Sheeds & KB Country kids Bourke & Clay, Tassie boys, Richardson & Hart. WA kids, Roberts, Boyanich, Balme, SA McKellar

National comp really. 4 flags then, amazing.

Met Billy probably 20 years ago, he shook my hand , only in the last year or so I’ve started to regain some feeling in it 😉

As an aside Bull Richardson was not from Tasmania, he went to Tassie after his VFL career which is why Richo was born there.
He was from Casterton in Victoria.

Will never forget sitting with him at a luncheon maybe 20 years ago. I reminded him of a Rich Carlton game after he had left the Saints.
The game was at Princess Park, and he went after Stewart (hard and high) on the wing, and happily just missed him. He remembered it!

Later in the day he saw Ian Wilson in the room and got up to have, ‘a few words’.

Pretty clear that he never wanted to leave Richmond and still loved the club despite what had happened, much of it behind his back.

While Stewart was very skilled and great for us, imo Bill was better.

Barrott was injury plagued, for us but barely got on the park for the saints. Stewart wins a Brownlow & a flag.

Don’t recall him being injury plagued although Tom Hafey later described him as suffering from an ongoing depression.

The club understandably took a lot of flack. Richmond town hall at the AGM following soon after the swap. Fans were ropable.
