'Black' Angus Graham, President's profile

Angus Graham.

The King Island Kolossus
The Raging Ruck
Bullocking Black Angus

With our first rookie-list selection (pick 5) three years ago, we felt we needed to develop a young ruckman, so we identified the two best ‘talls’ who didn’t get picked up in the National Draft – Angus Graham and Luke McEntee.

We basically pitted them against each other at training over a couple of weeks, and were most pleased to end up taking Angus as our Rookie Club’s choice.

Angus is a 200cm boy from King Island, who’s had a meteoric rise through the football ranks that year, having played more than 40 games of football for Assumption College, the Calder Cannons (TAC Cup) and Tasmania (the under-18 championships). He was still pretty raw, but we felt there’s quite an upside to him at just 18 years of age.

Coburg Tigers seniors

2006 1 game
2007 14 games

15 games including 2 best on grounds and two other listings in best players

2007 2 Richmond AFL appearances.

When drafted he was officially listed as:

DOB: 16 April 1987 Hgt: 197cm Wgt: 91kg

Currently listed as 200cm, and 93 kg, though we are all pretty sure he is a lot heavier than that now.

His date of birth does not appear to have improved since drafting.

He has a Draft camp measured leap of 71cm, which is in the top 10%. This will give him a reach advantage over even Sandilands.
Added to his good mobility and reasonable ball skills, he could be a really good find.

According to the club, his training effort and willingness to succeed are second only to Foley.

There is an interesting comparison to make over the next couple of years. Another ruckman was taken up in the same draft, who seems to have a similar development curve. Taken at pick 18 in the main draft by Hawthorn was Max Bailey.

Draft camp 2005

Height

Max Bailey (Hawthorn #18) - 205.8cm
Angus Graham (Richmond – Rookie Draft #5) - 200.3cm

Weight

Max Bailey (Hawthorn #18) - 93.0kg
Angus Graham (Richmond – Rookie Draft #5) - 92.6kg

Vertical leap

Angus Graham (Richmond – Rookie Draft #5) - 71cm
(Bailey didn't rate)

Not surprising, given that King Island is not a province of Afghanistan.

What are our development staff doing, still no improvement in this? ;)

But good to see "Black Angus" has a good work ethic and a willingness to succeed and improve, if more followed Foleys' lead I'm sure there'd be an obvious improvement all round. Good they've recognised his outstanding efforts with a leadership role, hope more follow Foley and young Gus' example

There are some great photos of young Gus available at

He certainly looks the part :clap

Great post Ghosty.

There's no doubt with the gap of ruckmen going from Simmo down to Patto, and more realistically down to Gus, that Gus is probably one of the big 5 in richmond's future beyond season '08.

In short, if Gus can prove to be a quality ruckman, one would hope with support from a more developed Patto,an older Putt and potentially Cartledge for depth then Richmond's ruck brigade looks pretty decent. Remember, Otto struggled in the ruck often at the Tiges, it wasn't until he was mature and at Geelong until he became a genuine ruckman.

If Gus can't make the grade, we are in trouble and will likely have to continue to draft a number of ruck options and trade away early picks for a ready-made ruckman.

Enjoyed reading your profile Ghosty. Here's mine that I wrote back in the day when I was Gus' pres http://www.puntroadend.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=29663.0

Reading over that it's good to see he definitely filled the need of "more muscle"

Is there something on the back of Angus,s head that his opponent wants to lick?[Patto and McEntee] :hihi :hihi :hihi :hihi

I hope that third photo is indeed "gathering the ball" and not in fact his kicking action!

Looks like we have a beauty here. Putt, Simmo, Angus, and even Patto, what a ruck division.............................now where have I put my sunglasses?

I hope the kid makes it.

TJ12 and others, what are your predictions for Gus this year.

For mine, if he stays free of injury, he will be second ruck by years end.

It really depends on the form of Simmo, and Pattison and Polak as rotating rucks. There's no doubt Gus will be given ample time to prove his worth in the NAB cup and practice matches. If he can impress there and in the VFL he will no doubt get a chance at AFL level early, after all, apart from the 18yr old Putt he is the only genuine ruck prospect on our senior list.

I'd like to see Gus play anything over 12 rounds and I think this is a realistic expectation, he's definitely got a ruckman's body and rotating through the ruck and off the bench shouldn't put too much strain on his young body. That's if Simmo and Patto can stay fit. I think Gus will debut before round 6, it really depends on how he performs as to what happens from there on in.

Without getting ahead of myself, I'm really excited about Gus. It's unlikely he'll ever be a star but he could quite easily be a 10yr + ruckman for the tiges. This year will be a very interesting one for the young man indeed.

I would say he has quire a few differences to Knobel, but critically:

Faster (Knobel was slow)
Can kick (Knobel only handballed)
Can leap (Knobel couldn't)

He also played 3 more games than him last year.
Other than that Knobel was great ;D
