Blair's Boys - 2012 Trade Week Targets

I'm not disagreeing. Freo have done us a favour not giving him a run if we want to chase him IMO. Value has dropped.

I was a fan last year.

I see him exactly like Maric, good ruck man, mobile & good mark and playing 2nd fiddle to a better ruck man.
He would be a goose if he didn't look else where!

He'd still easily be worth at least 2nd rounder. I'd keep it and put my faith in Tryone playing that role next year.

I reckon the backline's really close. Obviously they want Chaplin for the big roles on the Pavlich/Petrie types that Rance struggles with. That makes Grimey and Rance the 2nd/3rd KPD's and both provide really rebound. Batchelor also plays well on talls (as he showed against Hurley) so essentially we've got 3 players who can all start but also provide back up if you see what I mean. Morris looks set and Dea is also showing he might make it. That's our starting 6 next year IMO and lets Houli and Newman join the midfield rotations so the 7th defender can basically come from any of Houli/Deledio/Ellis/2012 draftee. That still keeps Griffiths, Post and Astbury as further back ups whether they're playing forward in the seniors or developing in the 2nds.
Yeah, I agree with most of that except the red.
None of those players are or should be in the back line. The other 3 you mention are forwards or question mark players.
Best way to get a good back line is to build it not hope for it. When I look at our list I don't see enough best 22 defenders more like a 50/50 mix of definite & possible's.
When we start to play defenders as defenders instead of forwards as defenders then we will see a strong back line.

Here's hoping we smash Port next week and somehow the Dogs beat the Lions.

If this happens, Port will move down a spot on the ladder, making our 2nd round compo a better pick.

Dunno. Enright, Corey, Hodge, Goddard, etc are all champion midfielders who have played a lot as generals in defense. If we want our own version of that I think Deledio's the man. His pace, delivery and decision making would make him a so punishing if we can build a top class midfield without him. Houli can also drop back on days the midfield's on top because as a loose man he can also be very damaging. Ellis has played a couple of nice quarters on a hbf (although I'd like to see him in the midfield mostly) and not sure why you'd disgree with 2013 draftee. ;D

The trick is replacing him in the midfield though.

Gotta laugh at the irony but talk of freeing up Lids to play HB is madness. He will be in the midfield now until his career is over. Lesser players will play the HB roles.

By the way, don't think Enright is a champion midfielder (your words) and Goddard has never proven himself there. His best form was always racking it up off HB.

If lids isn't going to play in the middle I'd rather he played forward than down back & Houli isn't a defender he's an outside attacking mid/forward flanker.
Ellis will be a mid you can take that to the bank.
And as for the 2013 draftee I couldnt disagree more!
:hihi

They were both still able to play midfield to a very high standard though. Maybe not champion quality if you want to take that literally but very good. All the great teams have had guys of that calibre playing in their backlines. That's part of creating midfield depth. It's not just about the guys selected on the wings and in the centre on the team sheet and their direct back ups. Your half forwards and half backs also need to be able to play midfield just as well as your midfielders do. Who do you think can go do that of our current defenders?

fingers crossed!
silivia wants out, would add heaps to the middle and he can also move forward. $350or $400 not bad for his quality
Clark, isnt getting any game time, time for a trade. 2nd rounder or Foley
Here we go with the Foley stuff again and it will probably continue until our list is final and N.Foley is still there. Look at our last 8-10 weeks to see how important to us he is. Please don't come with this stuff about him not getting on the park, if he is not fit for us he is not fit enough to trade either.

Personally I am not sold on Clark. I continue to hear we have interest in Nicholls from the Suns and he would cost a lot less.
Sylvia would be interesting at a bargain basement price but I expect us to draft midfield quality.

If we don't get Cloke I wouldn't mind us having a go at getting Zac Clarke in exchange for our 2nd rounder (not Ports).

We could play Riewoldt and Vickery as the 2 forwards and Clarke as the resting ruckman/lead up forward. The positive with Clarke is that he's pretty athletic and can run all day.

The forward line may be a little too tall though but Clarke would be an upgrade on what Miller had produced in the last couple years.

I think Dimma wants this 3 tall formation.

We could then definitely trade/delist Graham and McGuane and keep Browne for pure depth.

Not often with you Disco, but leysy is with this.

Midfield isnt just judged upon clearances. Its transition of footy, linking up in positive movements & then using it well that are just as crucial.

Geelong are king at recruiting these types & have built a dynasty around them. Add greats like Chapman, Johnson, Corey, Kelly to your Enright that often start in other positions but lose nothing starting in the centre.

Its an area we still have a ways to go as well. Hopefully this draft trade peiod can help. Its why leysy is a fan of getting Sylvia across if the price is right.

Yeah I know he is but there have been stories about him wanting out anyway. Probably just Internet rumours I guess.
He'll be an unrestricted FA when he comes out of contract at the end of next year. Get him then.

We have a bag of players coming out of contract at the end of 2013 - we need to sign all of them before we go chasing others!
