my blueprint for succes.
think we need to look at all the champion teams over the last 20 years and you will see they have a skillfull free running backline and they start their attack from there.
west coast in the 90's brisbane the last few years and maybe richmond in the year 2007 08 onwards.
you can't have kellaway ,*smile*, and ray hall in the backline and expect the ball to move slickly and efficiently to our wingers and fowards. as much as we admire their bravery their skills are not up to it.
i think kellaway should be allowed to finish off his career in 2006 when a kid should be ready to fill his spot.
*smile* would have 1 maybe 2 years left max. he is injury prone and could go down anytime. if a trade could be organised with a club that needs 2 top up.may be a young tall or to get a draft pick in the range from 12 to 20.
ray hall tries hard but skills are not up to afl level. he's very indesisive coming out of backline. again i'd go for a draft pick 20-35.
we are short of tall backman so go for trading tivvers and chaffey for a young tall.
so your backline in 2006 would look like
newman kellaway[1year] thursfield
bowdan shultz[the future] hartigan
this backline looks more skilled and mobile. i think shultz will be a star at chb and later chf. put him in preseason and just let him play. daniel jackson can be swapped thru the backline as well. i'd leave bling and delidio on the wings and let them enjoy their footy and get another 20 games into them.tuck in the centre. simmonds to be only used in the ruck changing with nobel.
chf will be a problem this year. pattison should be given first crack in preseason.
if we get rid of the chaffys tivendales halls and gaspers it will create some space for the kids to get some serious game time. we need to get 30-40 games into them quickly for a serious assault at top 4 in the year 2007 2008.
my first message so don't be 2 cruel.

Not a bad way to start r42. Don't agree entirely - I think Razor has made huge steps this year - his first in a key defensive position. But you're overall point is spot on. A lot more skill coming off the half back line is going to help this team a great deal.

So welcome richards42 (and don't worry - there are older PREnders on the site). ;)

Nice try, better than most, probably including this one
Hall is our only mobile tall defender that can play on the resting ruck, Everitt style player and will proboaly be resigned for 2006/7, Gaspar has a year left on a big contract and deserves the chance to finish it in 2006, and Kellaway will get two more years 2006/7, but I agree that they will not win us a premiership, and need to be replaced ASAP.
Hartigan is a query to me, great in 2004, not so good in 2005, sprays it about a bit too much, but could improve
Jackson needs to improve, *smile* dosent have TW confidence yet, so there is a big opportunity there for someone to put their head down and win a spot for years to come.

maybe ray hall could be kept for one more year as a backup if shultz gets injured.the reason to get rid of *smile* now is he may have sum trade value. in 2 years time he'l be finished anyway. the kids need to be given game time. we won't win a cup next year so we need to fast track the kids. hartigan does need to brush up on his kicking but he has pace and a time on his side. had a great 2004 and may have had the second year blues. wallace would have driven the complacency out of the whole group ready for next year.

Welcome Richo42! Good first up effort............

The "solution" you've put forward ignores one vital thing, and that is Terry Wallace intends winning games now as well as into the future. I doubt he is willing to sacrifice a year or two in the way you suggest. But, as a long suffering fan, I know where you are coming from.

Tell you what, if you can get the "Trade Gaspar" passed Anduril of PRE, then you are ready to lobby hard for this solution ;)

Other than the debilitating knee injury, I always thought of Gaspar as a rubber body, very rarely got injured. Gaspar's only got a couple of years left, wouldnt be much trade value left in my opinion, certainyl wouldnt get anything worth trading him. More value using his experience to help the younger blokes.

Hall, Im just not sold on him. I always feel that if we had other options he wouldnt be around. Has improved his skills but with averages of 10 possessions and 3 marks a game over his Richmond career, he is not the answer as a key position player providing run off the backline.

I do agree however, that our backline needs the work in the short-term. Providing the drive off the backline is critical in modern day footy, and I just cant imagine what position we would be in if a Bowden wasnt there week in and week out.

Cheers

Razor is a very fine player, not a superstar but does his job or dies trying. I think he could be an integral part of winning a flag. IMO he has already won us a finals game (vs Blues 2001). Can be played in ne position on the ground which can be extremely handy when filling holes. Considering he is only mid 20's and he has played in every position on the ground, i think he has done very well for himself and hope he can continue to improve!
