Bomberblitz landed a scalp on Media Watch tonight (see http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s1714781.htm for the transcript).

Basically, some posters there sent an email to several newspapers asking why they weren't following up an article (which the posters had fabricated and attributed to the West Australian) claiming that Essendon were planning to recruit Ricky Mott.

The West Australian and The Age are both Fairfax papers, and The Age had some space to fill after an article on Matthew Lloyd so they lifted quotes by Mott from the fake article and ran with it.

Then, the West Australian picked up the article from The Age as part of their reciprocal arrangements and ran with it also.

Brilliant! :ner :rotfl :beer

However, the West Australian is looking into the matter as the article used one of their journalist's names, not to mention the newspaper's name, so there may be some consequences.

If anyone from PRE considers a similar prank, get some legal advice first and ensure that PRE is not held liable!

Essendon have sent me a complimentary box of crownies for pointing out Dean Soloman was a scared phony plasticene tough man a few seasons ago.
They;ve realised the error of continually playing him and want to hire me as a consultant.

I've told them to go *smile* themselves, and Im happy to report they are succeeding on that front as well.

......don't even think about it. :help

With all the talk of legal action flying around at the moment I'd be nervous if that prank came from this site. It would make a very interesting test case if the newpaper honchos have their noses out of joint and decide to take action.

Who was the Age journo who didn't do his homework before publishing the info? :scold

It's pretty funny really. The Bummers in their wildest dreams couldn't have foreseen the papers would run with their prank. Amazing.

Ahh nothing like the age-old journo creedo "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story" apply at the Aged as well ;D

That is funny, not a good week for the media with the AFL criticiing the way they report the game.

It proves some of the media dont reseach and some are sooks when critisced themselves.

That's the 2nd time I know if in a couple of weeks that the Age has been caught out with fake stories.

Another poor reflection on the media and how the public consider it gospel.
