Players are held to different standards according to ancient deeds of the past and which club they play for...some have their mistakes glossed over or ignored by the media and the game commentators...others are well and truly hung out to dry for them.
The difference is stereotypes based on past history/perception and the ingrained opinions which stem from them...not facts.
Agree on all of this, Rayzor. It has annoyed me no end for years that players like Lloyd receive the softest free-kicks and others like Fletcher virtually decapitate opponents in marking contests while Richardson is belted from pillar to post and the only criticism from the media is for the Richo dummy-spit.
Much of it has to do with the "Winners are grinners" mentality. By and large, the media do not criticise winners, only losers. RFC has lost more battles than it has won over the years, hence some of our players are favoured whipping boys.
The other reason for Essendon players' "lilywhite" reputation is Sheedy. He does not tolerate media criticism of his players, unless it comes from him and he is doing it to motivate them. He is always standing up for his players, down-playing their mistakes, talking up their reputation as fair ball players (even when they aren't) and deflecting scrutiny. He has done this better than anyone else over the years. The image of Winderlich sprinting around the MCG after the game in HS yesterday would have been a very carefully structured exercise to deflect criticism form Lucas, Watson and co. Last week it was "Hollywood" Monfries who saved the bacon of some of his senior team mates.
He is the master of media mind-games.
