Brisbane appoint Voss new coach

Their issues are their list and off field problems not the coach. Bailey has been quite impressive IMHO.
In sending a club south quickly & efficiently. There has been nothing impressive about Melbourne this year.

The test for Bailey and Melb will come in his last year of his contract when they are still near the bottom, their are more people turning up to watch John Howard's speaking engagements than going to Dees' matches and the content of his talk is re-building and playing the kids ad nauseam. Will they have faith in him them?

Can someone tell me who was the last premiership coach not to have served some kind of apprenticeship?

Alan Joyce in '89 iirc? Or maybe it was '91? Anyone could have coached that Hawks side to a flag.

John Nicholls and Alex Jesaulenko both did it at Carlton. Both were captain-coaches and I'm pretty sure Nicholls won the 72 Premiership in his first year as coach. Jezza won the 79 Premiership as C-C also, but I can't remember if it was his first season.

Has been done.

Just because Timmy Watson had no idea and gave inexperienced coaches a bad name, it doesn't mean no one else can do it.

Still, its all about the cattle. Will Voss' cattle make him look good or will they burn him?

Who is to say that when Voss was still on the lions list, that he didn't do a year of training/coaching, then, a bit of media, take a few of his hitting buddies with him to Qld and have a go.

We will find out in time how he goes, no doubt it will keep the media off our back for a few minutes.... maybe....

See Aker's said Voss isn't ready for the gig yet. Reckons McCrae should have been given the caper.

Why do I feel this is going to blow up in the Lions face..

I'm very happy we get to keep McCrae 8)

Good luck Micheal.You.ll join the ranks of KB,Royce Hart,Timmy Watson as champion footballers who should have stayed as Ex Footballers ;D

There are two pivotal moments in the 2002 GF: The time when Voss gets crunched by Burns, only to see him win back the footy and set-up Black for a Lions goal; The second, just prior to 3/4 time - a 55m kick on the run. The result? Another Lions goal.
Voss played the way he trained and for that, his peers will respect him even more.
IMO, he has excellent charateristics to be a successful coach.

The players you mention Capt. (KB, Watson, Hart) were given easy options and were well looked after at training.
When they all coached, most players were puzzled when they would instruct, "Run hard, tackle hard...hit the opposition!"
Maybe they had memories of Watson limping off the ground, early in the last quarter in the 1990 GF ;)

Geez we're going back a bit there. Captain-coaches? Think we've moved on a bit since those days. Personally I'm a bit shocked that a historically professional team like Brisbane would make such a hasty move. I think its ludicrous to not interview what's out there and then make an informed decision. I'm ot sold on Voss's capabilities either based on some of his commentary. I think Akermanis made a number of good points, one being his lack of experience, two how he will cope coaching players he played with 2 years ago, and 3 his capacity to confront others with issues (apparently a bit of a weakness). Will be interesting to watch it unfold but I wouldn't be confident as a Brisbane fan. Seems a bit of a lottery.

At a guess, I would say either Malthouse or Sheedy. Sheeds might have been a part time skills coach at the Tigers when he retired. Malthouse, I'm not sure about 100%

Aker said on SEN that McCrae had signed a new contract with Richmond, wonder how long for and if it has a get out clause ?

2 years I heard, it would have a get out clause if he gets offered a senior position.

McRae definitely resigned for 2 years. And ya as Ian said, you can take it to the bank that EVERY assistant contract has that out clause.

Besides, most if not all, clubs/senior coaches have good attitudes about letting people go to advance their own careers. It's almost a unwritten code, unlike players :hihi

For the cynics out there, well, you don't really want to keep someone on your list in a crucial role like coaching if they don't want to be there do you?
