Not sure why they changed it....perhaps because it would drag the night on longer than it already is if they need to read out 9 votes for each game!

Back then I was a boundary umpire and I can tell you the two field umpires discussed who they were going to vote for after the game. They also asked for input from the boundary and goal umpires. 3 and 2 were often the same with maybe the 1 being different

The rationale is that it avoids rewarding mediocrity with votes they don't deserve.
Fair enough, I reckon its fine the way it is atm.
