I think they did that back in the 1970s after the two umpire system was introduced. Didn't Teasdale win with about 50 votes??

Not sure why they changed it....perhaps because it would drag the night on longer than it already is if they need to read out 9 votes for each game!

Back then I was a boundary umpire and I can tell you the two field umpires discussed who they were going to vote for after the game. They also asked for input from the boundary and goal umpires. 3 and 2 were often the same with maybe the 1 being different

Reason they are required to keep polling is IF (big IF) 30 players are rubbed out during the year for the Dees and the Tigers, do you really want Hyde, McMahon, and Bowden racking up votes simply because they were the only ones out there not suspended?

The rationale is that it avoids rewarding mediocrity with votes they don't deserve.

Fair enough, I reckon its fine the way it is atm.
