They have some pretty handy players coming through in Gumbleton, Meyer, Ryder etc, but losing Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher, Michael & Johnson is going to hurt. A good 3-4 years away from it for mine.

Gumbleton, Dempsy, are having a lot of trouble getting out on the park and getting game time. Not sure about them with respect to their bodies being able to endure the rigours of AFL football.

We all know they are highly rated talents, particularly Gumbleton as a key forward, some said he was the best in that draft. Yet they are now a step away from putting him in for some radical treatment after specifically concentrating on building his core strength his year in the hope they can avoid radical surgery.

To top it off his now had bad luck with high impact injury.

Doesn't mater how highly rated you are though if you can't get out on the park. The sheer fact he has had so many hamstring injuries before he has barely played any games would be a serious worry down at Bomberland.

Dempsy is a acute as well, his had the usual high impact (broken collarbone) you would expect from a stick (JON had the same) but his showing worrying signs of muscular / skeletal strains early also.

Myers looks good, as does Ryder. Hille has come of age this year as I was confident he will. I'm not sold on Stanton myself, can run all day and get plenty of it but doesn't seem to hurt opopsition or be able ot put it together consistently. Welsh and McVeigh are good and I've always thought Lovett-Murray is okay.

There is something about Remiers I like as he has that old school agression and he can kick goals and play in midfield.

I actually think Essendon is in serious trouble, I think Knights recognises this quietly and is going to hit the draft hard this year. Smart move. If they don't get their pics rights they are in for a dismal next 5 years for mine. If he gets it right he can seriously build on the youth already there.

There is talk they are seriously after Kerr, that would be insanity for a club like Essendon or Melbourne to go for.

Essendon, more than any other club, needs to take some pain. If i was them, if possible contractally/getting right deal done, I would be offloading Fletcher & Lucas. They won't be part of their next premiership and they can now cover for them (in limited ways granted, but they can't cover for Lloyd in any capacity yet). Due to their consistent form clubs that might be tempted to "top up" would jump at them.

(Hawthorn>Fletcher?)
(Adelaide>Lucas?)

I think they are on the way down myself, not the way up. Their "rebuild" would have to have been the most weakest one I can remember since Pagan got all those second hand damaged goods from other clubs right after they had all those draft concessions. (Not a real re-build i know, but that is my point).

To be fair they have had trouble getting games into their draft pics of the last three years, but I have a strong suspicion about that which ends up pointing back to them doing the wrong thing again. Though they have fixed that this year I suspect.

They got great service this year from Hille, who didn't get injured until 3 games out from the end of the season. Good run for a ruckman in great form, if he falls over they have nothing (like us) to significantly help.

Ryder is not a starting ruckman, besides they will need him at CHB and Laycock is a hack.

Here's hoping Lucas, Llyod, Fletcher and McPhee can hold up there spine enough to ensure they finish 9th (which is the highest I think they can go next year).

That way when they fall apart in 2010 they'll be living off the Gold Coast's crumbs. >:D

I agree with you on Stanton, very over rated for mine

At the time of the last two drafts most people considered that Essendon did very well considering their picks available, but it's very early days to judge the results of those picks and if they have some who fail due to injury then they will definitely struggle. Their drafts prior to the last two-three were all pretty ordinary.

Hille is the type of player they can build a side around, but by the time they are going to be back up and running he will be looking at retirement soon after.

DD, I've been thinking Essendon are on the way down for a while now too.

After 2 years of rebuilding they are relying on average 50-100 game players to keep them competitive and their fans are fast becoming the new Richmond fans of 1983-2004. If they don't get their act together, they could seriously take a decade before they realise they can't make a half-hearted attempt at rebuilding a poor list.

Then it's another 8 years for that list to hit their peak.

We may have missed Buddy, but we did gain Deledio and Cotchin from the precious few high picks you get at the bottom. Two elite superstars.

Essendon have Gumbleton, and that's it. He may only ever reach Polak's level.

I do not rate Ryder, and he's one of their few "positives" when people look for them. Myers, finally, was a good get. This year they should get one more pretty good player if they dont trade for Kerr (huge mistake).

We found Cotchin, Deledio, Foley to kickstart a champion midfield. We have Moore, Thursfield, McGuane, Rance, etc as a champion backline and our weak area up forward contains Riewoldt, a 19yo KPP who has already dominated a few matches and kicked a bag or two, Hughes, who has kicked several bags in very few games, and Morton averaging 3 goals a game for half the year at 21 years old.

Then we have plenty in the bag such as Connors, Edwards, White, Raines, Putt, Gourdis, Jackson, Meyer, Cass, Patto, Gus, Collins, JON, Polo, Tambling, Collard, etc.

If we make the most of our picks this year then we've got a real, genuine list that might need a little bit of shaping as far as structure is concerned, but the talent and quality is where you need it to be for a successful era to take shape.

Some on here will take a pitchfork to you Benny for such a positive view of our list.

I'm not one of them.

Couldn't agree more with you, almost my thoughts exactly.

As long as we attention our Ruck, Key Position and Inside Midfielder needs this year, especially the first two, we are going to be very well placed going forward

...and with a few irons in the fire to boot.

Yep, there are 3-4 important players missing from our list.

We should keep our picks and try to draft them ourselves instead of trading them all so 1 of these positions is solved for 4-5 years with Kerr.
I think you're being conservative with the 3-4 players Benny. But I agree with what you're saying.
