With all the rain today and all these people on the MCG grounds, what will that do the playing field?

Don't get me wrong it's a great initiative, but am a bit worried about the state of the ground afterwards.

Not much time to fix things up between now and the 26th.

I actually think the G won't be too bad afterwards as the grass there is exposed to the natural elements and has more potential to recover than the grass at the Dome. The grass at the dome gets little natural light and is pretty much is in a process of dying from the moment the grass is laid.

But regardless of this, we could play in a dust bowl for all I care ... I can't wait for Thursday week! Besides it is a good cause.

Looking at it on foxtel it looks like they've got the playing surface covered with some sort of flooring.
I'm sure it will cop a bit but hopefully will recover in time for the 26th

i don't mean any disrespect for bushfire victims as i know some are members on PRE, but i'm sure another venue could have used for the bushfire relief with just as many tickets sold. the MCG and etihad stadium are sports stadiums... no place for concerts or raves. it took etihad a few weeks to recover from the sensation party on new years eve.

The state of the MCG surface should be the least of Richmond's worries at this moment.
With blockbuster games scheduled within a fortnight, the G will be like carpet.

The ground will be fine

They rolled out a heap of vented matting yesterday to protect the surface. That will come off on sunday and the ground will get ten days plus a manicure to help it recover for the season opener.

Where Ian?

Can you name some venues that can hold 100,000+ patrons and give them all good vantage points around a stage Ian? I'm glad the concert was at the G and so many turned up to support those in need. Knowing people involved with the grass and surface maintenance over the years I'm sure measures were taken to protect the ground and it will be fine for the opening bounce.

Change of subject - H & C - How bloody good were they -

brilliant.

Saw Mark Seymour last Saturday night. First time in 15 years and he hasn't lost anything when it comes to live gigs.

what a great concert!!!!

and yes ian...where would you suggest...and why is it exclusively for sport??...I am sure i have seen a few big concerts there in my life...i bet there are some people who have only ever been to concerts there and not footy or cricket...i know i know...i find it hard to believe myself...:):)

Just saw a shot of the MCG on the news after just about everything has been packed up and the ground looks nice and green.

No obvious signs of mud

where would i suggest? i dunno, princess park? calder park? flemington racecourse? some open air park? i've been to many raves held in open parks or in the bush. i concede none of them have had 78,000 in attendane, but i have no doubt it can be done.

i live across the road from the grand prix track and i walk around albert park lake 3-4 times per week. right now i'm watching the track go up bit by bit and it truly looks like a bloody logistical nightmare. i don't claim to be an engineer, but i'm sure organising a rock concert in an open park would be a hell of a lot easier to organise than a grand prix track with grandstands, concrete barriers and the like.

you have to remember that with the new northern grandstand, close to half the MCG is now permanently in shade and they have had issues with the surface. a concert must cause some type of damage... can it repaired less than 2 weeks from round 1? i hope so, but i have my concerns.

I don't think you've offered viable suggestions really Ian but nether the less the surface of the G being a problem pales into insignificance compared to the millions of dollars raised for bushfire victims.

I didn't go but got 8 tickets for family and friends and was told a real highlight that gave people goosebumps was Paul Kelly singing Leaps and Bounds...wouldn't have been the same in a park when the song is about the G.

On behalf of all friends who were affected and will benefit from the concert heartfelt thanks to you all. :hearton

i'm not gonna turn this into a debate Rosy. let's just give praise to the organisers, the bands and the people who attended for helping raise money for the bushfire appeal.

Apparently ground has recovered well & will be fine for round 1.The MCG is not the dome so to me this was a non issue
