PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

There's a good Robert Walls article on realfooty about Jobe Watson today.  It discusses how the Bummers could have felt some obligation to draft him, how he was almost gifted a game, only played 13 games in his first 3 seasons and looked out of his depth and how he's turned it all around to be runner up in their b&f last year and their best inside player and most productive midfielder.

I like Jobe as a player but what has this got to do with Richmond?  I can't help but wonder how Jobe would have been bagged on here in his formative years.  It seems easy to highlight deficiencies and demand perfection in young kids starting out.

We have a lot of kids who are under close scrutiny from PREnders who are even calling for some of their heads.  Players are put in the spotlight earlier now and it's more the exception than the rule, as it used to be, for kids to do lengthy stints in the 2's before being promoted.

It's fine to discuss the way they actually play but it's naive to write them off without allowing them to develop and mature.  Not many 1st and second year players dominate consistently at senior level.  It would be good to show some patience with the kids and see what their future holds rather than write them off for not being instant champions.

Maybe we should get off their backs and support them.  The law of averages indicates not all will make it but there could just be some surprise long term players who are being written off because their first few years don't live up to certain expectations.
