Call to join in the Tiger roar

By Lance Jenkinson.

COBURG Tigers are calling on supporters to dig
deep and buy a membership in 2003 as the club
aims to win its first Victorian Football League
premiership since 1989.

The Burgers will be eager to erase the nightmare
ending to 2002 when they were upset by Port
Melbourne in the dying stages of the preliminary
final at TEAC Oval.

Despite the disappointing ending, an under-sized
Coburg was gutsy and entertaining for their fans
all season and offered great value for money.

The biggest change during the off-season was the
appointment of former North Melbourne and Brisbane
Bears player Paul Spargo as coach after Alan
Richardson took on an assistant role with the
Western Bulldogs.

Spargo said he would place his faith in young
Coburg blood and Richmond rookie-listed players
to fill the void left by experienced forwards
such as Paul Hudson, Craig Ednie and Ezra Poyas,
who have left the club.

Club president Peter Bacash called on supporters
to jump on board as there would be more exciting
times in 2003.

"Buoyed by the success of 2002, with new coach
Paul Spargo and a first rate list of players, I
look forward to a great year," he said.

Bacash said the VFL offered fans the ultimate
in football experience.

"You can choose to sit in the large covered
grandstand, on the outer hanging over the fence
or on the Coburg grassed hill.

"No matter where you sit you are right in the
action - you can even hear what the players
are yelling.

"Aside from cheering on Coburg, one of my
favourite pastimes is getting onto the ground
to listen to the coach rev up the players.

"More often than not I stand in the huddle and
turn around to find Richmond coach Danny
Frawley standing, listening as well."

Coburg kick off their season on April 5 with
a blockbuster encounter against Werribee at
Coburg City Oval.

More immediatly, the Tigers are pitted in a
practice match with Springvale at Morrabbin
on Saturday.
