Camera?

BM considering time is getting away a bit I'll move this to DyerTribe so you have a better chance of a reply before you leave for the game.

Small digital/still cameras are permitted into the stadium, provided they don’t require a tripod and the use of the camera does not obstruct the view of other patrons around you. Audio recording equipment and video cameras are not permitted into the stadium.

Sounds like it's a goer.. good stuff - Thanks..

I've brought my Canon digital SLR with 100-400mm BIG WHITE LENS many times to the MCG & Telstra Dump without any problems.

You just get a lot of people staring/admiring the size of your lens!! ;D :o :o :o

DG - what kind of focal length do you tend to shoot at when at the footy? I know this is a bit like "how long is a piece of string" - but am wondering whether you tend to get anything decent below 200mm

Firstly it depends on you camera. Some multiply the focal length by 1.6, so for example a 200mm lens becomes 320mm, a 300mm becomes 480mm etc.

It also depends where you're sitting at the ground. Obviously the further back you are the bigger the lens you will need.

200mm will generally do the job but I reckon 300-400 is even better.

I'll be sitting about half way up Section N1 (http://www.mcg.org.au/Events/~/media/Files/Football%202009%20Seating%20Plan%20%20%20Entire%20Stadium.ashx) - behind the RFC cheer squad - but one level up.

I have a Nikon D80 - so not full frame - and at the moment only an 18-135 kit lens.. I suppose I'll just bring it along and see if I can get any decent pics...

that'll get you some reasonable shots. Not great, but reasonable.

ive done similar and had no dramas. as long as you arent getting in teh players faces hanging over the fence or anything ur ok.

FWIW - 135mm was way too short to capture anything decent.. OK pic of the banner at the beginning - but aside from that - nothing.. Not that there was much worth taking pictures of last night anyway.. Seems like a 200-300mm lens is the way to go..
