Campbell - Is he really what Richmond needs?

dont know if this true or not but i have heard and read in the paper that there are 7 senoir coaches coming out of contract at the end of 2009 , as far as what i heard and read and finally remember it is
WALLACE
ROOS
WORSFOLD
WILLIAMS
EADE
MALTHOUSE
THOMPSON
Out of these 7 Eade. Roos,Worsfold and Thompson are all but guranteed of extensions
That leaves Wallace, Malthouse and Williams that could be poached or given extensions from their current clubs.
So here is the choice that not only we face but other clubs do also.
Dose Richmond make a play for the above and who would it be or given the number of assistants are out go for the likes of
Campbell
HARDWICK
SUMICH
WEST ( I WOULD RATHER CAMPBELL)
VINEY
RHODES
OR do we look at a VLF coach such as Gary Ayres
if i had a pick of 3 that i could only interview the following would be on my list
Worsfold
Sumich
Ayres

You can't be serious about Ayres. He is a has been who is so mundane and boring when he speaks. Sumich doesn't appear to be too bright either. Worsfold some chance although I lost respect for him re: how he handled the drug culture at West Coast. I will throw up another name what about Chris BOND???

No, i dont think Campbo would be the answer , even though Eade has pumped up his tyres.

He has been part of a losing culture.

Sheedy maybe till season's end. Install some confidence in the group, some passion for the jumper and pride, history.

The problem will lie at season's end as there will be at least what 6-7 coaches whose contracts expire.

We will not be the only club looking. Are we going to get what others reject? The 'fish that John West rejects"

Please not Royal either. Have heard his name on radio being branded about.

Ayres? That would guarantee the club fold. I reckon Port will make a big play for Hardwick so we either need to get in early or forget him. If Malthouse isn't renewed at Collingwood they would surely go for Buckley in the first instance. I'm warming to the idea of Collins but one things for sure we need to make the decision based on an exhaustive process to identify the person with the right qualities.

Welcome to PRE gdog. :)

Bondy was my favourite player.  I'd love him to bring his playing attributes to a coaching position but I'd have concerns about him coaching some of the blokes he played with.  Maybe he's been away long enough, and had experience at enough other clubs, for it not to be an issue.  I dunno.  I certainly wouldn't mind him being considered.

My thoughts on Campbo as coach are negative I'm afraid.  He was captain during a very unsuccessful period and he never managed to sort out a major player rift from what I was told.  I'd be concerned about him coaching some of the players he played with.

I hope we don't go for a token Tiger coach as a feel good kind of option.  Our players need a ruthless coach who is willing to make hard calls and who won't cop any player crap.  How often has Terry said "our senior players let us down again"...yet never managed to address the problem.

Hardwick is our man. The only other person who I would consider is Chocco Williams. Forget about the rest.

The only reason why Hardwick missed out on the Essendon job was because he told their board what he thought of their list........Its not good enough! A re-build would be required. Unfortunately for Essendon they didnt like this and hence went for Knights who pretty much said the opposite.

We need Hardwick because he will not be frightened to tell it like it is.

As a Hawk supporter I can say that Hardwick is highly respected by all at Glenferrie. Essendon made a mistake not getting him to replace Sheedy. BTW, he made the match winning move in the grand final last year and moved Dew from the back line to the forward line in the 3rd quarter. Not a bad positional change! Definitely the best that's currently available. However, if Port go after him I suspect he will take that job. From the outside looking in it is amazing that Wallace was not fired 3 years into his contract after the Tigers finished at the bottom of the ladder a couple of seasons ago.

Welcome to PRE Willow.  :)

BTW I dispute your claim above.  My husband made that winning call from our loungeroom. :blah

Age of premiership coaches on GF day

2008 Clarkson 39    1998 Blight    48    1988 Joyce  46
2007 Thompson 43    1997 Blight    47    1987 Walls  37
2006 Worsfold 38    1996 Pagan    49    1986 Jeans  53
2005 Roos    42    1995 Parkin    53    1985 Sheedy 37
2004 Williams 46    1994 Malthouse 41    1984 Sheedy 36
2003 Matthews 51    1993 Sheedy    45    1983 Jeans  50
2002 Matthews 50    1992 Malthouse 39    1982 Parkin 40
2001 Matthews 49    1991 Joyce    49    1981 Parkin 39
2000 Sheedy  52    1990 Matthews  38    1980 Jewell 36
1999 Pagan    52    1989 Jeans    56

Jeans at 56 is an outlier in this data set. One of the few to leave the Richmond coaching position with dignity largely intact, Jeans finished up after one season, ostensibly for health reasons. Whether it's the physical toll coaching takes or communication issues related to the "generation gap", coaching is a relatively young man's game. Even the legendary Jock McHale, who coached Collingwood well into his 67th year, achieved the last of his eight premierships at the age of 53.

By GF day 2010, Sheedy will be 62, Matthews 58 and Malthouse 57. Not that you'd put a line through any of them on that basis alone, but there is reason to be cautious.

Wayne Campbell?
Id rather keep Wallace

Agree. Has everyone forgotten 1996- 2004 - when the club was held to ransom by a very powerful clique: Campbell; Daffy; Gale; Gaspar; Knights; Richo (there are a couple more but only a couple).... Now, don't get me wrong, but a couple of these guys have been excellent servants....

BUT all were chronic underachievers in big MUST win games - you all know this....

The worse thing was, however, these guys were on MARQUEE salaries and perpetuated a mediocre culture that rears its head to this very day.

IMO Campbell played 297 games and I rarely saw an outstanding one - unless of course you judge his performances by gathering dozens of CHEAP 20 metre kicks on the boundary.

If we go down this path - we are in dire straits....

We need someone who will come in and tell a few home truths before the likes of Cotchin start accepting mediocrity (i.e. playing like world beaters against bottom 8 teams, but playing like handbaggers aginst top 5 teams).

Not a fan of WC &,were he to coach,I'd prefer it to be after Richardson & Bowden retire but ,playing 'devil's advocate', Tom Hafey didn't have any playing success at RFC either....

Unsure about Chris Bond.I too liked him as a player but that he's been passed over on recent appointments doesn't inspire confidence plus the fact he's been a fixture around Fremantle FC,which isn't much of a recommendation...
