Campbell, Richmond's history and what happens now

Campbell has been a very good player for Richmond, and that's why four best and fairests under his name is such a poor reflection on the club.

Players that get four best and fairests should be out and out champions. They should be Leigh Matthews (5 of them), James Hird (4 times) or Wayne Carey (4 times). Campbell is not in their league and unfortunately he has been crucified by many Richmond supporters because our best player did not compare so well with the best player of other teams.

Campbell is no champion, never has been, but some poor administration has given him more money than he was ever worth because he was the best player going around for such a long time. That's not his fault, but Richmond's. Daffy, Gaspar, Holland and even Knights (again, he was good, but not that good) were all going around with inflated price tags because they were the best going around at the club, but definitely not in the AFL.

This leads me to players and who should get moved around. Players should only be traded when their wages do not correspond with their abilities, or if they do not fit the balance of a team.

Hence I categorise the following players as getting us more bang for our buck and should not be traded:

Ray Hall - the guy has played some very good games for Richmond and I'm betting he gets paid next to diddly

Hilton - gets paid less than diddly and played some very handy games (and he beats his opponent more often than Newman does, even though his performance against Geelong may not have been the best)

Hyde - been up and down, but the guy is hard, runs all day, and scored Richmond's goal of the year with the dodging and weaving followed by the don't argue for a goal against Fremantle

Pettifer - more than one goal a game from a player that gets paid a bare minimum is a great return. Having said that though, he is the most one-dimensional player on our list. He can't crumb, he's not much of a mark, he can't snap, he's not quick and he can only play in a forward pocket or flank. He can only get cheap possessions, but those cheap possessions have gotten him goals, and his delivery into the forward line is very good, so keeping him around on diddly ain't that much of a problem.

Stafford - this guy is a better ruckman than Simmonds and Knobel, and he's a better forward than Simmonds or Knobel. His season was definitely not the best, but considering next year he will get paid diddly if he wants to continue, Richmond would be stupid to cut him considering he is the best ruckman/forward the club has got.

In terms of players that don't fit into the mix of Richmond players, I put the following:

Coughlan, Tuck or K Johnson - one of them has to go cuz we don't need all three. They aren't quick, they aren't all that creative and they don't have super class. They are all worth something on the trade market and we need some backs.

Tivendale - there are so many players ahead of him already that he will only be filling time in Coburg next year if he stays. Doubt he'll be tradeable because other clubs watch Richmond games too, and they would know he's *smile*.

Chaffey - same problem as Tivendale in that too many players are ahead of him in the pecking order and he's probably on some reasonable amount of money

Krakouer - I think he's had a pretty good season kicking more than a goal a game and being a part of the midfield rotation. Having said that though, I hear he's on a decent wage which I don't think he deserves. If so, try and get rid of him for something decent.

Mate any person who can average 23 possessions at afl level over that period of time pretty much deserves the title of champion. Agree no superstar...but a solid performing Richmond champion....you don't win 4 AFL level B&F by being an average mug.

Hall aint going NOWHERE.........

Very good year.......with a bit of added weight and working on his decision making, get the ball look up and kick it long with his left foot.....big things from him next year.

Agree. His ability to run off his opponent & present as an option on the wing taking the ball forward is invaluable.

Hall has no skill whatsovever turns the ball over with incredible consitancy. Yeah, lets keep him as he fits the Richmond mould of the past 25 years perfectly. ::)

Campbell is /was a champion because of his consistency. I don't believe there are any but the absolute best who can claim such a long career with the stats he routinely picked up year in and year out. Also most of it was in the centre - contested possession and clearances. Even this year his stats were excellent as was the general impression of his game day impact. I think you have the concepts of champion and multiple goalscorer intertwined. In my view you can be a champ without being a heavey goal scorer. Robert Harvey is a similar style of player though I would admit slightly better though more injury prone.

This thread amused me re the discussion on Hall because both were right. Against the Hawks sloppy kick out on the full and caught in possession both in the first quarter and I wanted his head. After that, numerous runs and three great goals - I gave him his head back.

I think the guy has improved this year and shown glimpses of being reasonable and is a good straight shot at goal into the bargain. Needs to improve again like so many Richmond players (including Pettifer) on this year's effort to reduce the number of calls for his head. I like improving players like Hall, Newman and Pettifer - it gives me hope that they can improve still further.
