Can't open any downloaded text files

Ok PRE tech heads, whenever I download a file ie an application form or something like that I now can never open them. If I try and open then I get an error message says "Invalid menu handle" and when I try and save it and then open it whatever program I chose to open it it always ends up in gobbledygook. Up until the last few weeks they usually automatically opended with Adobe or whatever. I still have Adobe though.

Anyone with an ideas? Thanks.

Something sounds wrong with your registered file types.
Are they zipped files you are trying to open or just plain .exe's
Open My Computer, Click tools then folder options.
There will be a tab called file types.
From here you should be able to select your file extension and what program it uses to run.

If not a re-install of XP should do the trick
