Cap Space in 2010

Tigers of Old said:
Upon thinking about it further, I think Richardson will only have to be a sniff away from any sort of fitness to play on next season, as surely the club will work hard to cash in on the final year of the Tiger champ (merchandise, memorabilia, functions etc.).
If they do it right the marketing department could pay for Richo's wages and then some.

I reckon you are being too conservative there ToO. Market that right, and they could pay half of the total salary cap payment.

And then he has a great year - retires, and then miraculously fronts up again. This could all be so scripted - we just need someone from the WWF for the drama and John Farnham's agent to line up the events. It can't lose!

Let's just hope the last game we play next year is a home game that isn't a pre-agreed gate sharing match.

Shaun Burgyone yet to sign at Port. Will only stick around if Williams gets a contract. Gee if you only had cap space. ;D

lets hope that the last game we play in 2010 is really late in September or the first week in October......the gate won't matter.

as far as claw can tell we have 20 players who come out of contract this yr.

the 10 in the gun as far as i can see would have to be
bowden brown, hughes, johnson, pettifer, simmonds, pattison, raines, polak, jon,

the 10 out of contract but probably safe that will have to be renegotiated are

cotchin, cousins, deledio, jackson, rance, morton, mcguane, richardson, putt, and maybe coughlan.
i think nahas and maybe browne will go to the list proper and like phantom said putt is a chance to go to the rookie list. 6 of this this group will probably demand a rise of some sort 4 of them substantial rises one would think.

what is of concern we have 19 who comme out of contract next yr it seems everyone is clumped in a two yr period.

the contracted players for 2010 are.

collins connors edwards KING foley graham hislop MCMAHON moore polo post riewoldt SCHULZ tambling thomson tuck thursfield vickery WHITE.

Contracted to 2011 is newman.

apart from the 4 highlighted players who i think would be in the gun if not contracted we have an opportunity to clean out a good portion of the list cloggers. those 4 will have to wait. i hope they dont waste the opportunity.

Amen, don't we all.

Still think there is a massive chance for a smart football club to use the Salary Cap and trading table to improve the list.

Take Sanchez for example.

Is it possible that you could palm him off to a another club with the following deal.

Jordan McMahon and our third round pick, we pay %40 of his 2010 salary (140k based on 300k)

For your second round pick. Give up pick 38, Jordy for pick 20-24.

If we think that the talent runs out at 25 then these are the top of deals we should be looking at. You need your talent identifaction process to clearly nominate a given point where the talent runs dry and then try and build deals around that point.

Just wondering, if we cull Simmonds, Brown, Bowden, Johnson, Pettifer plus a couple others, how much cash will that free up?

I think between those five we are looking at around 1.5-1.8 mill. Add a couple of chump change contracts in and you are at say 2 million . If we take that out of our cap and half of Richardson's wage and half of Cousins go on the veterans list we are now getting close to 2.4-.2.6 million out of our cap. If the cap is 8.80 million (that is the 2009 figure) we are only going to be around 6. If we take on 6 drafts picks, the wage slides form about 55 to 45, that adds on 300-350 say. We are up to around 6.25- 6.3 million. Still with 2.5 million to play with before you touch the marketing money. I have rounded up to make it worse case.

Now, even if you factor in wage rises for those to be kept, (say 1 mil and that is ultra generous we are up to around 7.4) we still will have 1.4-1.6 mill to play with. Even if you want to pay the %92 that is required by the AFLPA you still need to spend another 600-800k.

What percentage of the cap will we pay in 2010 and is there enough money there to entice someone via the PSD?

The reason I ask this is there is nothing more dangerous then a shaky list manager, with a fist full of money trying to make a name for himself during trade week.

Will we learn nothing from the Jordan McMahon debacle or will we go again on another B grade talent?

Or do you lock away someone of your young talent before the GC pounce?

With cap space, draft picks, and smart man running the show you could make a real impact.

Discuss.

lock in those players now that will take us thourhg the next 8 years. Redirect the remainder into player development and football department.

I did hear somewhere about 2 months back that this was being mooted in the mid season review and that development and footy dept were priorities.

Agree with the concept.

Although would anyone really want Jordy??

Well you never know if you don't get creative. It's easy to sit back and just let the year play out but why wouldn't you have a crack at moving him? Worse case is you are going to pay him 300k next year. First year player will get a base of 50k plus match payments. You can pay up to 200k of Jordy's wage and still save money while getting another shot at improving your list.

I have no problem with Jordan sitting at Coburg all of 2010. But I would at least try and get a return on a deal that gets worse and worse as time goes by. I called it our worst trade over the last 20 years and I stand by it.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree.

I wasn't have a crack at you, it was just another go at McMahon.

After watching him on the TV yesterday, I am not even sure Richmond could do a deal with a VFL club.

Yep you'd have to give Jordy and a 2nd round pick to another club for their 3rd round selection to get any deal done.

:hihi

Are we still paying his wage to get that deal done?
