It's interesting following the plight of the once all powerful Blues.
The last few years resemble us in the late 80's early 90's with wooden spoons, crap lists and no money. (the exception is the continual change of coach)

They currently have 19000 members and are some 7000 down on the same time last year , more than likely because the bandwagoners have jumped off because of no wizard cup.

Richmond has somehow managed to stay afloat despite its continual lack of performance.
The Blues with multiple flags in the 80's and in 95, R/up in 93 & 99 and many finals appearances have completely fallen off the perch and look headed for another wooden spoon which could mean an even more perilous outlook.
The Big 4 as it was known is now the Big 2, Essendon and Collingwood.

It is a credit to our supporters for really sticking fat as a past employee once muted.
It's is well and truly time for our club to start paying back it's loyal supporters by making grand finals tickets available to members who have financialy supported Richmond especially in the last 10 years. The Gold/Silver/Bronze concept is a good one but could be better to reward the hard liners like us.

Back to the Blues and the combination of Optus Ovals legends grandstand, salary cap rorting penalties, years of mismanagement by John Elliot, pathetic list management and above all the arrogance that they and their supporters have shown over the years has come back and well and truly bitten them on the bum. No one except Collingwood and Essendon deserve it more than Carlton.

We are well placed to take over their mantle and become the 3rd biggest team in Victoria. Supporter wise we are not far behind, membership wise we need to lift. Waking the sleeping giant in Richmond won't happen overnight, but the foundations seem to be in place. We have and will continue to do our job in supporting Richmond financialy, it is up to our Board and brain's trust to steer the SS Richmond away from the storms and inclement weather and into the ports of Monte Carlo and Tahiti.

The Blues have many years of rebuilding in front of them and poor membership, lack of major sponsors and poor attendances will ensure they lose even more money and support. We have a golden opportunity here to start touting for blockbuster games at the G to regain our status as a major player in the league, get a better deal from the MCG, get better draws from the AFL and help bring our financial status akin to an Essendon or West Coast.

A golden oppotunity now that the G is finished, comeon Richmond the time is now!

It's all about success, thats what breeds active supporters. Geez I hope Carlton don't finish above us this year after your inspirational speech.

Cheers

Unless the Tigers win a couple of flags on the trot we will never compete against the Eagles financial status.

You don't actually need to win a flag to get the crowds back ( although it would help 8) ) If you take St.Kilda they have been threatening for years now and their membership has grown to over 30,000 or Geelong, who were struggling only a few years ago and now.... well they are both threatening and their membership is growing.

Carlton (if they make good use of their draft picks) will get better and they do have a good coach who can take them to the top. But I doubt their members are going to stand idle while they end on the bottom for 3-4 years. They will be baying for Pagan to go....and that will really start the cycle. If you have been on their forums lately you can hear the rumblings starting already.

Shame really .... :cutelaugh:rofl :rofl

Spot on Heather........ and Saints came from a much smaller suppoerter base than us. :clap

Carlton at least through all their troubles starting in 2003 has managed to somehow fully utilise their rookie list and have drafted alot of kids to give themselves a chance of bouncing back quickly.

Good post TJ.

I like the bit about Monte Carlo and Tahiti. I'll get the sunblock out in readiness. ;D

Tigerjoe, I'm a little confused with your stance on this topic.

Initially, you describe the fallen plight of Carltons supporter/ membership base and then attempt to illustrate how Carlton are no longer classified as the Big 4. But in a sudden twist, you call for (Richmond) paying back it's loyal supporters by making grand finals tickets available to members .

Firstly, let me remind you, (at present) there is no sustainable evidence to conclude, Richmond are part of the Big 4. And secondly, over a 25 year period, there have been several examples of years of mismanagement & pathetic list management with the Richmond FC.

Whilst you describe now as a time for golden opportunity , it is very difficult organising block buster games at the G, without the likes of a team that has won 16 premierships - Four more than Richmond, since that year.......1980.

Well Skills to be part of the Big 4 you need to be able to get crowds of 65-70,000+ and have a great supporter base. No teams except Collingwood, Carlton, Richmond and Essendon can do this. This is all the evidence anyone needs. Look at the past few blockbusters Carlton have been part of, they have struggled to get 40-50,000.

I am not that good a writer so excuse me when I jump from point to point but when we do make it to a GF their will be one hell of a scramble for tickets, those that should have priority are the ones who have financially supported the team through the dark years i.e. the last 20.

My main point is that while they are down it is a perfect opportunity to stake a claim for priority in the Afl draw and for major games to be taken from Telstra Dome to the G. Yes include them as opposition so hopefully we can belt them like we did last year, but games against teams like the Saints could get 55-60,000 and become semiblockbusters.

It's a shame the grass roots members don't get any advantage in regard to grand final tickets.

I hate the way the AFL provide so many to the corporates and big-names who'd never go to a game or support the League otherwise.

Being in the country makes it even harder to get GF tickets when you can't get down to be in the queues.

I have no faith whatsoever I'd get a ticket if Richmond made when Richmond make the GF.  I often think I'd be better off saving my membership $ each year and putting the money aside to pay a scalper.  I reckon they'd be my only hope of attending.

As a little exercise, it may be worth revisiting the AFL's comments at the inception of Colonial Stadium/ Telstra Dome, teams like Carlton, Collingwood Essendon & Richmond would never play each other, away from the G !!! - Why are we still playing Carlton at Telstra Dome?
If Carlton are struggling to collect more than 50K people to there home games, it makes more sense to keep the Carlton Vs Richmond matches at Telstra Dome.

:clapGreat post TJ :clap
Yep I think over the next few years the sleeping Giant will awake and it will be a fantastic ride ..There is a part of me that feels a bit sorry for Carlton (only a very small mirco bit)

I remember the Tigers Scumwwod match last year after a few wins the Tiger army were back in full force for the first time in many years esp in the last Qr and its a fantastic site to hear see ... as the youngsters get better we will climb that ladder I think ina few years we will Challange the Bombers and Pies for the Biggest and Best supported team team in town

Great post - it is about time we claimed back the 'G as our true home ground. No more home matches at the Dome. The fans apparently don't like and the team doesn't like it.

The fans need to be recognised and rewarded, and while it is a great initiative by the RFC to introduce Silver, Gold, Platinum and Black & Yellow levels of membership I find the rewards and waiting times to be unbelievable. Five and ten years for the first two levels are fine, but then to have to wait 25 and 50 years is almost unbelievable.

To put it in perspective, we last won a premiership 26 years ago this year. Imagine that premiership inspired you to become a member in 1981. It would only be now that you would be recognised as a Platinum member, and then all you would get different to a Silver member is a different cap and lanyard.

Personally I think at that level and after that many years of CONTINUOUS support you should be guaranteed finals tickets.
