this subject would have been missed this season as we haven't won any games. a close look at the games we have played this year will show that the winning culture is starting to develop. in every game tis season we have been in a position to win, the fact we have lost all those games is disapointing but the improvement is there. last year we were on the receiving end of some almighty big floggings, those team that dealt out the pain last year were run a lot closer this year. the improvement in the team from round one to last week is good to see and i belive one of the key factors is the confidence we are showing in our younger players.

i expect us to struggle for much of this year but if we are taking it up to the other teams every week and earning respect then eventualy that winning culture will transform into winning games!!!!!!!!!!!

Had to stop.A winning culture is starting to develop but haven't we lost every game?Even if we aren't getting flogged we are still losing.

Re: a winning culture

A competitive culture may have been better for a heading, but I know what YandB means...

We are building a winning culture, and we will win, soon.

If they have a crack every time they go out, I am happy not as happy as I would be winning but happy none the less.

Re: a winning culture

I'm not sure it's a winning culture yet, but I think we've got the spine not to be creamed like last year. We don't seem to give up as much when we're behind.

To be honest, despite being 0-5, I think we're playing better than last year. Even is we come last, at 0-22, but never lose a match by more than say 40 points, I'll consider it an improvement.

I think we got lucky last year. The amount of 100+ thrashings we received didn't deserve a 9th place finish.

Re: a winning culture

Agree Yanb with your comments and we are matching it with some elite teams.

We still need to build on finishing sides off & continue to attack when winning rather than contain & when momentum swings be able to stop it.

Re: a winning culture

we seem to be ironing out the 'throw in the towel' culture we had last year. Maybe we didn't have the cattle, but some of those losses last year were quite disgraceful.

This year I have seen a group of players giving their all for the duration and striving to play to their ability. Maybe a 'strive for excellence' culture is a good start.

Re: a winning culture

Boy talk about a premature thread - a winning culture where you don't actually ever win??? Where you have positions where you are in a potential position to win but still manage to throw it away? Are we so desperate that we are now claiming a 0-5 start (which will probably get very much worse in the weeks to come) and which represents the most abysmal beginning to a season that Richmond has experienced in many years as evidence of an emerging 'winning culture'? I could imagine that if we read this on another club forum we'd be laughing our heads off. Again compared to the two previous seasons the trajectory of the club is actually heading in the wrong direction, assuming again you base a winning culture on actually 'winning' (a radical concept I know?). And an even more damning statistic when you consider we have had the advantage of playing our first five matches of this season on our home turf.

Personally I cringe whenever I hear Wallets pronouncement on a 'winning culture' as I believe it is a meaningless concept without the players to implement it and is part of his strategy of rebuilding from the middle of the ladder which I don’t believe in. Still, even if 'winning culture' is valid, I can't see how we have any yet when we don't actually win and in terms of winning compared to the previous seasons we actually seem to be going backwards.

Re: a winning culture

I know where you are coming from yandb. I'm not convinced though, I'm still worried about the soft capitulation against scumwood.

Re: a winning culture

I know what yandb means, although what worries me is that in nearly every game Richmond have played they have been in a winning position, but folded once the opposition has put pressure on them.

Thats called a losing culture

Re: a winning culture

Understand where you're coming from yandb and I agree with you, although it is a bit premature to say "winning culture". Even though we have won less games than at this stage last year, I agree that we are a much better side and tha we've showed signs of the potential to be much better.

Hopefully, the days of the 100+ point flogging are now behind us.

Re: a winning culture

I think that this is THE most important issue at the club right now. We are gonna see over the next 16 weeks just how many players on our list are winners. That is those those capable of growing from the 18-20 y.o students of the game into players who want to be successful and not just sign a massive contract and buy a freaking Monaro. That is what Wallace and the football dept are fighting for right now. They are trying to establish the very heart and soul of the team. But they can't do it alone.

How to change our culture

As a keen football follower i watch other games not only my beloved tigers. What is clear is the difference between how our kids perform at AFL level and kids from other clubs.i,ve lost count how many times i,ve wondered to myself that why cant our kids look as comfortable at AFL like most others do at other clubs.
The fact is that our losing culture is so far ingrained in our more senior players that the lack of confidence within themselves actually has a flow on effect to our kids on the ground.
Brisbane is a perfect example.Despite losing the likes of Acker,Voss,Lynch,Micheal,Scott & Leppitch they have kids who are performing because the senior players who are left still have that winning culture which rubs off on the kids.Apart from Jonno we dont have that luxary.

So whats the solution?
Im a firm believer in kids growing within themselves.Apart from Richo,Newman & Simmo i would drop the entire senior group.{Tivendale*,*smile**,J.Bowden,Hyde,Johnson,Tuck & Pettifer}.By doing this it will elevate the likes of Deledio,Tambling,Foley & Polo too a new young leadership group. This is very important in getting rid of this losing culture because it actually free,s up the kids to actually perform with abit of freedom to show off their skills.Kids thrive on self belief and self confidence. To have fellow kids around you would actually bring out the best in every kid.
Please Terry let the kids be themselves.

I agree - radical surgery is needed to change the culture. :help Leadership needs to be transferred to the next generation. The older guys can get on or get out of the way. 'Tanking' is crap - it makes losing acceptable. Play the kids to win.

After having a think about this game and alot of recent ones i now believe is less about a winning culture and more to do with a hard working culture. I have come to realise, we are by far the Laziest football side in the AFL !! Very few Players are willing to bust a gut ALL DAY, not for 1 or 2 or eve 3 quaters.

Thing we don't do enough are:

Run Hard to create space - Players continuley jog next to or behind the ball carrier. we turn the ball over time and time again due to lack of options and then blame the kicker Give him something to kick to!!

Man up - It's a real easy concept, stay on your man and force a 50-50 contest EVERY TIME

Chase out of the forward line - forward pressure creates mistakes and earns rewards

Chase in defence - when the ball hits the ground anywhere near the oppostion, nearly always ends up with a shot on goal.... PRESSURE THEM

Chase anywhere on the ground - why do our players jog at 70% behind the oppostion ball carrier??

Continuely lead in the forward line all day, not in spurts - Need to present many leading options to avoid predictable football.

HOLD tackles - Our tackling is Pathetic, get someone from the Melbourne Storm and Pay him part tim to teach our guys how to tackle

We just refuse to do the Hard stuff, Its very hard to Run all day, but you look at a side like West Coast and thats what they do, they do what it takes to make things happen. Our players are lazy and do as little as possible and i'm SICK OF IT

:phew feels good to get that off my chest

Agree with all of the above. We have to find players prepared to work hard and do the above things that lead us to being a better side. The lack of tackling pressure, especially in the midfield is deplorable for an AFL Team.
