Let me start by saying I'm gobsmacked that Bowdo hasn't won a spot as I'm a huge fan. As with many I thought he'd be a walk up start this week.
BUT
A club is not about individuals(who's your favourite?), it's about winning and there is no doubt in my mind that the past three weeks has been some of the most determined & committed football I have seen from a Richmond side in years. Who's been missing from those games? Who's been playing?
As a one on one comparison, McGuane doesn't have aspects of Joel's skill set but there are obviously many things he does offer ahead of him in Wallace's opinion. At this point in time anyway.
- He's a genuine tall.
- He's a close checking defender.
- He's young and improving.
- He's hungry & desperate to prove himself.
- He gives us flexibility & adds to our structure.
- He is not tainted by mediocrity and failure and is probably more malleable to coach than a 30yr old.
These two players are not competing for the same spot IMO anyway.
Bowden is being overlooked for fast ball runners like King & McMahon.
It's these guys that JB is competing against to win back his position and the simple fact is they are ahead of him in both Wallace's short and long term plans.
Sadly is seems Joel's days are numbered and if he's going to continue with the Tiges past this season he'll needs to reinvent himself in a hurry in the same way players like Schulz & Richardson have.
Even then he'll be up against it after what David King said a few weeks back.. the club isn't really interested in investing time in teaching old dogs new tricks when they have a shedload of youth breaking down the door at Coburg. If we're on the march I am 100% fine with that.
Joel for many will always be a Tiger favourite no matter what happens to him from here on but past AA's and JDMs or not, the reality he's had many years of opportunity with the RFC and tasted little success despite being an integral ingredient.
One senses it will be very tough for him to get back from here..
