Chasers Disgrace

I would have liked for them to actually appreciate what they did was wrong full stop - no excuses and no explanations. They are sorry for the outcome (mainly because it got them banned IMO), not for what they did, which is what people were upset about.

If I robbed you, and apologize in court for the inconvenience I caused you, thats crap - I still don't get robbing you was wrong.

All I'm saying is that if they refused to apologise, people would be offended. If they apologised without explaining themselves, people would say they didn't do enough. They've said what they intended, acknowledged they went too far, and said "We got it wrong. We're sorry" Regardless of whether the skit was right or wrong, I don't think people should have a go at them for apologising!

They didn't apologise for what they did though, they just apologised for anyone who may have been offended.

IN any case, didn't you think the gag was funny, so I am assuming you think no apology is needed

We never imagined that the sketch would be taken literally.

This is the guts of the problem.
They think it's our fault for taking it too literally.
And they are apologising for not understanding that we would do that.

Weak as p*ss.

Hmmmmm.... it's interesting that the usual suspects from the "political correctness" thread are here demanding that the Chasers apologise. It would seem that they are against political correctness unless it happens to a form of political correctness they agree with - then they are all for it.

I'm not saying that no apology is needed, I'm saying that they have apologised, and to now stick the knife in over the semantics of the wording is, in my opinion, rather petty.

I don't think I said the gag was funny. I did say I haven't seen it. Based on what I've read from people it does sound exactly like how the Chaser boys described it, black humour, taken too far perhaps, but certainly not meant to be taken literally.

I have no issue bagging PC stuff, but I'm still yet to have anyone tell me what the underlying gag was in the skit.

Is it stiffing dying kids their dying wish that is funny? Or is the charity something that needs to be targeted (i.e. like a greedy poli)?

I'm happy for you to call me petty, thats cool. It comes down to sincerity though, and the actions of the Chaser guys make me believe that they are completely insincere on this. If they don't think they have anything to apologise for, they shouldn't have apologised (and dealt with the consequences accordingly).

The underlying gag is that they are joking about a group about whom it is typically taboo to make jokes. That's what black humour is. I think they said that in their apology (before acknowledging that they went too far)

Thought it had to be funny to be humourous. Even black humour should at least be funny.

I'm sure some people do see humour in it. You not finding it funny doesn't mean it's not a joke.

I'm sure there's lots of Irish people who object to being made look foolish in the 'Irish' jokes, and there are probably other people who call it racism. I'm sure that if K.Rudd made an Irish joke in a press conference he would have to come out and apologise for it. That doesn't mean it's not humourous to some people.

so you think its okay to make racist jokes because some racists will think they are funny?

I've yet to read or encounter anyone who thought the sketch was funny.

I make Irish jokes yes. I was in Ireland last week, talking to some Irishmen about those jokes, and they told me that no-one there really gets offended. I also don't care when people make jokes about Australians, or when my housemates from Sydney bag out Melbourne, as I would hate to live in a world where we are all so ultra-PC and sensitive that we can't have a joke. Obviously, before you say anything, I am not saying the Chaser sketch was OK, I was defining black humour, and explaining that while it may not have been to everyone's taste or liking, it was black humour. It was a joke about a taboo subject, intended to be funny. For which they have apologised. I haven't seen the sketch, but I am sure that there are people out there who thought either the sketch, or the idea behind it was amusing.

How did you feel about the email postcards being sent around of pictures of the White House with watermelons growing on the lawns? Is that black humour and therefore okay?

I will garuntee you will not find anybody who has dealt with a dying child will see any humour in the stunt at all.........*smile* wits of the highest order......

This conversation is being sidetracked, as really, my taste in humour is irrelevant to the point I was originally making, that they have apologised, explained themselves, and I don't see the point in then being critical of them for doing so. As for the email postcards, I can't say I have seen them. Obviously you have friends who feel it appropriate to send them to you though, perhaps you can tell me about them?
