Chasers Disgrace

This conversation is being sidetracked, as really, my taste in humour is irrelevant to the point I was originally making, that they have apologised, explained themselves, and I don't see the point in then being critical of them for doing so. As for the email postcards, I can't say I have seen them. Obviously you have friends who feel it appropriate to send them to you though, perhaps you can tell me about them?

Nice try, but it has been reported in the press - some Republican politician got busted sending it around.

Your sense of humor is relevant, as you have deemed something acceptable as long as some people find it funny regardless of any offense it causes others.

When did I do that?

I was responding to someone who said black humour had to be funny, and I replied that to some people the Chaser sketch would have been funny. The Chaser team intended it to be funny. They went too far. People complained. The Chaser team apologised, whilst explaining that they were intending it be over the top black humour. I never said the Chaser joke was acceptable, my point, stated several times now, is that they have apologised for it.

I'm sure some people do see humour in it. You not finding it funny doesn't mean it's not a joke.

I'm sure there's lots of Irish people who object to being made look foolish in the 'Irish' jokes, and there are probably other people who call it racism. I'm sure that if K.Rudd made an Irish joke in a press conference he would have to come out and apologise for it. That doesn't mean it's not humourous to some people.

Yep, simply put, they went way too far.

They are *smile* of the highest order, bunch of unfunny hacks, making a living by the hordes of simpletons that actually think this type of modern comedy is actually funny.

Try talking to these dimwitted buffoons and you will find they are of the highest caliber of stupidity.

I guess the world is pretty stuffed at the moment, hence why dickheads like these can be famous....

Concur with CC's comments.

Quite unbelievable that nobody involved with the skit or production had the wisdom to question such a distasteful piece before it went to air.

No wonder the head of comedy has been sacked.

I think you'll find that I wasn't saying it was acceptable in all circumstances, I was saying that some people would find it funny. It was Black Humour.

calling it "black humor" is putting it in a classification of comedy that is acceptable. This went too far, crossing the line from black comedy to offensive

"But that aside, we’d like to apologise. The piece was a very black sketch. Obviously too black. And we’re really sorry for the significant pain and anger we have caused. "

As a white male, I find that offensive. Why can't it be a white sketch?

once again, sorry it annoyed a few people, but obviously those who don't get their black humor. This is the issue, it was not black comedy, it was offensive comedy.

By using the term 'black' they really have gone too far! Give them another two week suspension!

On that, how long has it been now? Anyone heard whether they are coming back on air? Would love to know what their ratings are like for the first show back. (Actually, the second show back will be more telling)

I see your point. Obviously there's a lot in the delivery of their apology which I didn't see, and I don't know what else they've said in other interviews etc. I was just reading the text of their apology cold, and I really thought it said all the right things (whether they were sincere or not is obviously a matter of opinion, but I'm just going on the wording) I really thought that apologising for the 'significant pain and anger' demonstrates that they realise the piece offended a lot of people (rather than 'annoyted a few people') and that they went too far. They are a comedy team who constantly play around the edges of what is acceptable (remember the eulogy song?) and their humour is generally quite black, and black humour does run the risk of being offensive.

At which part?

The concept of a realistic wish.

Look, I understand it is not too everyone's taste, and I can understand why it would be offensive to many people. National public TV probably wasn't the best outlet for this kind of sketch. IMO like most australian TV comedy, the concept was OK, the execution was average.

I have a 2 year old daughter, and touch wood, if anything happened to her, i would want to give her the world. Without knowing the guys, i'm sure if you asked them individually, they wouldn't want any person to suffer. But that is not really the point. I didn't go into the sketch with the mindset that the Chasers guys held that view.

I think I am paraphrasing Bill Hicks, who was/is one of the most respected comedians, comedy is at its best when it sits on the edge and plays with society's values.

i suggest you watch Friends repeats then - that couldn't be any whiter.

Can't believe you think the chasers are cutting edge humorists - most of they time they aim at soft, simple targets. Making fun of sincerity is one of their specialties. My guess is they were a bunch of spoilt, bored, private school educated prats joined by this common link.

You have a problem with Private schools? Or are they, perhaps, a soft, simple target?

Any update on whether the show has returned, for us living outside of Australia?

Had the first ever episode (as far as I am aware) on BBC4 last night. It is a cut down of the 'best bits' and presumably removal of purely local/Australian references that the international audience wouldn't get. Watched it with my English girlfriend and both thought it was average. Couple of funny skits but a bit of dross as well.

Will give it one more go to see if it gets funnier.
