Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

only at our club. this "name" player has not been a top line performer for 18 months.

Yep I was referring to Richmond. I don't follow other clubs closely enough to know what they do.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Look at the way Collingwood are treating Nick Maxwell.

That's the way to manage injury for veterans.

We rush in, like fools. Chalk & cheese. Professional & Richmond.

There's some rubbish about how we desperately need his experience...

Here's the thing. Maybe if we played some other guys they would be experienced by now. Always the short term with this club - petrified of getting it wrong, condemned to do so.

So true.

Played on one year too long. Truth be told he should never had played that final last year either. Which is kind of the crux of the whole issue we have. Dimma just can't make difficult decisions with his favourites. Plays the tough guy with Nahas, Tucky and Matty White by playing them in the VFL to work on deficiencies but refuses to do the same with the serial offenders that I don't even have to name anymore.

I really like Dimma as a person but the whole Newman scenario is on him and it's not good enough.

He killed Richo off ten seasons too early ;)
Richo was still travelling better than Newman back in 08
Another situation like Kingy. Kept for too long at the expense of White Tuck Nahas and Richo
He's becoming cancerous and must be treated effectively

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I think if Newman is given another year that will be it for me. I ll still buy a membership and watch the game on the weekend, but my carefactor will be gone. no thinking about Richmond, no reading about thrm no talking about them during the weeketc.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

If Newman was a true leader he'd step aside for the good of the club. Unfortunately the playing group are too selfish and lacking proper culture. Look at Jackson this season, clearly injured, couldn't run all week, but plays and then further injures himself. The players should be putting the playing group and the club first not themselves. Do the senior players think they run the club?

It's unfortunate that Newman's career is going down this path, but it just shows that his time as captain did not create a progressive and accountable environment at the club

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

If doesnt retire or get pushed all respect lost for him and Dimma. We want ruthless !!

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Speak for yourself... I don't want Ruthless, I want Professional...

Ruthless doesn't built loyalty or culture or performance....

MNC are ruthless and lets ask the Ford and Holden workers what ruthless looks like..

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Have liked & respected what Chris has done for the club. Stood up to led at a time when no-one else could.

Really hope he realises how he is tarnishing his legacy and reputation by the decisions he is making i.e.

- playing in a final last year when clearly not right. It hurt his team & potentially cost us a win. selfish.
- playing on this year when he was in obvious decline.
- not (as yet) pulling the pin this season, even though finals are an impossibility. now only taking a young footballers spot in a role that is perfect for development. selfish.

If he plays on again next season he will be looked back on my a good percentage of fans in a very negative light. Announce his retirement now & play one send-off and all will largely be forgiven. Hopefully he considers that and some confidants point this out.

And yes leysy realises a lot of the above decisions should also be made by the club. They are weak for not doing so, however it's Chris reputation and what is right for the club that he needs to think about.

You forgot that he's fuelling the fire by saying that he feels right and wants to go on every time anyone asks him. I can guarantee that if we do have the balls to actually delist him he'll put himself in the draft to try and get another go round somewhere else. We'll probably rookie list him.

Totally agree, and you can add King too. Your post reminds me of previous ones made on here years ago for similar situations with past players. Selfish refusal to retire and let kids come through as other clubs have done. I just see our club as a holiday resort.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

now is probably a good time to repeat that he has publically stated he wants to continue on next season

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Time for a tap on the shoulder and a farewell game. If the club had to gift him anything, make it a small time coaching role next year that tries to improve kicking skills. I distinctly remember max hudgeton not getting this much charity!

I shudder to think the ruthlessness that Ross Lyon would show to Newman if he was coaching us.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Personally I think it is a great shame, Chris has been a fantastic servant of the club and I would love to see him go out on his own terms rather than be shown the door. He was wavering a bit last year on whether he would go on, I hope he makes the call to retire.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Straight back in AGAIN!!!!

What a flippin joke!

Lucky none of you would give me odds!
