Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

Did he really? Rather ironic given that he used probably his best kid as sub last week, Macrae.

Came out and was very upfront with Macrae. Basically gave him a public whack for caring about his own game at the expense of the team.

I can't imagine Dimma doing the same for our noble leader Newman, master of the 10 possesion game.

You're spot on St K, but the only way Newman will ever play as the sub is if he takes an injury into the game. We desperately need his experience, leadership, run and versatility. Probably would have dropped both the Saints and the Brisbane game if Newie hadn't been out there.
Beg to differ.

Sorry. I should have used the sarcasm emoticon. Those things I said were all reasons given by the club for Newman's selections over the past few weeks.

Yeah had suspicions that you were way to intelligent to make such an outrageous statement like that. In all honesty he should have been put out to pasture 2 years ago.

I was okay with him last year, although he was definitely on the decline. We really should have let him go after that.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I've been a long time supporter of Newman.
I'm rapt for his career and what he's done for our Club.
I reckon he's been brave, reliable and skilful.
I've often defended him here against illogical rants.
I've squirmed at games when knucklehead Richmond supporters yell personal abuse at him.
Newy has a well deserved honourable place in RFC history.
Congrats Newy.
I'm also of the view that it's time for one of our younger blokes to play in his place (whether it's O'Hanlon, McDonough, Arnott etc - doesn't matter).

Well said mate. Gotta agree with all of that.

Yep, well said bravo. But its time to go. 95% of people think this way.

It's a bigger shock that the coaching panel can't see this.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Has got to the stage where we are seriously hindering some kids development by retaining Chris. Massive strategy and succession planning issue.

Been an excellent servant of the club and deserves our respect. Should have retired after the final loss.

Shouldn't have played in the final for starters. He dropped a lot in my book after he did, when he clearly wasn't right.

Agree with this though can understand his determination to play after so many years without a final.
Tend to blame the match committee more for that one. Whilst it would have been a tough decision to leave him out, he shouldn't have been picked.

I'm very much of this view as well, but as long as he stays there he will continue to be picked. If he says he wants to go around next year then I'm certain the club will offer him a contract for 2015 and continue to deny a young player who could use the opportunity that very chance. Selfish, Chris, very, very selfish.

Sorry Carners but it is absolutely the club's fault if this comes about.

Chris is just a guy who probably loves his footy. It's his vocation and if he takes so much pride in it that he can't see the bigger situation than I can't fault him for that.

The club is the sole mad party in this. Probably Dimma if other selections are anything to go by.

Oh, I agree the club has to wear a fair bit of it, but when you see the guys who have realised that their time is up and that they're not benefiting the club anymore, and pulled the pin it's hard to believe someone who has been around as long as Chris and played as much football as he has can't see it.

Fair call. I suspect the club is convincing him otherwise.

Dimma perhaps, thinking he's on shaky ground with the younger players.

Maybe.

I keep thinking of Darren Glass. He saw it and stepped aside. Surely Chris can see it. Everything the club says does indicate that they're telling him otherwise, but surely he knows that he's getting a game on false sentiment.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Hoping the RFC finishes on a good note, celebrating Newman's final season.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Alan Didak and Ryan O'Keefe are two prime examples of premiership stars, both far better footballers than Newman, treated with way less sentimentality.
Another pointed difference between successful, ruthless football clubs and RFC Benevolent society.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Up to this season my respect for Newman has only grown each year, I once was a bit of a critic due to the fact he seem to always play loose an hold on to the footy for to long, but with each year I started to realise how much courage this bloke plays with an how he has got every single ounce out of his body an his limited ability, for a player of his ability to Captain his club with plenty of honor an great respect from other club captains is an amazing achievement that not many people achieve in there chosen fields. Anyway I find it hard now watching Newy as obviously I wish him well out there, however I feel his holding back opportunity for a youngster to be blooded. As for him been selfish, how many people would give up a 400k a year job for probably at best a 100k 9-5 career , yes I hope he retires , but he doesn't owe the club anything, they can and should make that business decision not Chris
