Up to this season my respect for Newman has only grown each year, I once was a bit of a critic due to the fact he seem to always play loose an hold on to the footy for to long, but with each year I started to realise how much courage this bloke plays with an how he has got every single ounce out of his body an his limited ability, for a player of his ability to Captain his club with plenty of honor an great respect from other club captains is an amazing achievement that not many people achieve in there chosen fields. Anyway I find it hard now watching Newy as obviously I wish him well out there, however I feel his holding back opportunity for a youngster to be blooded. As for him been selfish, how many people would give up a 400k a year job for probably at best a 100k 9-5 career , yes I hope he retires , but he doesn't owe the club anything, they can and should make that business decision not Chris
But they already seem to be doing that now, CCT. He's about 6 games off 250. They're picking him each week to get him to 250. I just don't get that at all.

Agree totally CC.

For mine - The end of season will tell us a huge amount about how were looking to arrest our slide going into 2015 .. And should also offer some answers by virtue of their (board/footy department) actions

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

He is currently on 243 games, today will make it 244. If he plays every week for the rest of the year he will finish with 250.
Although I prefer a young guy getting his spot I do see value in giving him the opportunity to get to the end of the year and finish on 250 if his form stays at the current average/OK level. By that I mean, he is not embarrassing himself out there like Kosi was.

However, if he gets to 250 and it is a great farewell story and shows the young guys how the club will try to look after a senior player who has done so much for the club blah, blah blah and then 8 weeks later we find out he is coming back god help us.
Worse still, if he gets injured, finishes a few games short and then gets offered another contract then that would be mind-blowing.

Trouble is he is putting his hand up to go round again... So it wont be a great farewell story..

Big fan of Chris but its time, no one should be gifted games, esp 5-10 as needed to get to a milestone..

If he does get a little help to get there he'll appreciate it after the fact.
They may not tell him there decision is made until after the season out of courtesy.

I don't believe that can be a blanket statement. There are times when it can have a positive benefit for the younger guys. And in a season where finals is shot and our team is too good to tank completely for a high draft pick and we have other senior role players (Foley, Petterd for example) who could easily be given a week or two rest to bring in some more young guys to give them a go then I am OK if this is a genuine nurse attempt to get him to 250 by the club.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

250 is a nothing milestone.

Newy is actually playing pretty well at the moment. Can't get there enough, but when he does he's pretty solid.

Should still retire or be sent to the glue factory.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Newman won some critical possessions today and that tackle on white resulted in a crucial 12 point play

He read White like a book. Perfect example of a footballer that knew exactly where he was going to go.
Morris no idea Jack

They are not just playing Newie so he can get to 250. He has been a good servant for the club and deserves to be treated as such, but I am sure that he along with everybody else knows, football has gone beyond such sentimentality, particularly earlier in the year when we could still have made finals.

They may have gifted him one or two games in junk time or even as a sub if it would get him over the line, but he has been playing all year and in the starting line up too.

His best game for a while yesterday too IMO.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

He's in good form at the moment and deserves every right to play.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Juff agree that gifting games to youngsters is different, i would love Beanie to get a run (9 goals in last two games isnt exactly gifting but anyhow)...

One of my favourites is Chris however i hope for both his and RFC that he hangs up the boots at years end, perhaps have him around in a admin role going forward, but as a player hes cooked, obviously will put in the odd good game, as others have said when hes at a contest he still is a very good one of one player, just cant get to enough contests anymore, that happens and so do retirements, its time unfortunately for a great servant to step aside!

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Article on the AFL website says he will sit down in the next few weeks with the club regarding next year.

Sounds like if his body holds up for the rest of the year then he is keen to play on.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

He went a year too long last year. And again this year. Surely not next year too. C'mon Newy, I love you, but it's very much time to call it quits.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Needs to do the honourable thing and give a young guy the chance. The club won't push him out of respect. Reckon he needs to make the call himself.

It seems as if both Chris and the club are very keen for him to play his 250th and they'll keep picking him to get him there. I think if he plays that and says he wants to play on, then the club have to step in and say it's time for Chris to step aside.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

While he shouldn't be in the 22, I'll accept it if the club gets him to 250 games as long as he retires... problem is, I said a similar thing this time last year (I'll accept he plays in the finals as long as he retires).

Not many players walk away when they think there's something left in the tank. Interesting to see how the club handles it.
