Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

Woeful game from the "skipper" but who is surprised?

Name me an IMPORTANT game where you sit back and say "gee Newman stood up".

There is none.

We haven't played in too many "important" games during his career.

Any chance he will take the game on?

It's hard to know what to do with this bloke. He became captain when there were few other clear choices and he has played in defense during a time when we have leaked goals all over the place. Can he play anywhere else and do we have the depth to replace him down back?

We have to try something but our options are terribly limited.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Benign.

Time for Cotch or Lids if he proves worthy this year.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I didn't notice Chris being overly terrible. Who was his opponent against the Pies?

Think he had a number of opponents over the course of the night.
The reason I am a little disappointed is because the things he's been renowned for over the years are letting him down a little so far this year.
Specifically his defensive acts and disposal. Also as has been mentioned he appears to be struggling with the pace of the game.
It's not getting any slower or easier out there and Newie is starting to look veteran class.

That's the exact reason, noone knows who is on, plays loose and occasionally comes for the intercept mark.
The biggest problem for me this year has been his kicking out has been crap. Kicking straight to the opposition or just coughing it up with really poor excution.
Looks like he is playing in 2nd gear. Considering we were playing with an extra man in defence Collingwood always had options coming in. Not sure he is playing as tight as he was a couple of years ago.
For me he has been in bottom 3 players including preseason, Jackson, Vickery included...

Also the question is, if he wasn't captain would be be a guarantee starter each week??

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I love Newy but his disposal (surprisingly) has been the most disappointing part of his game in the first 2 rounds. We really need him being clean across half-back

The thing with Newmans disposal is that it hasnt always been top notch. Like Bowden before him, to an extent, its illusionary. He's a left footer who always look classy, he has an easy kicking style and he often does dinky 20-30m passes to an unmanned teammate (hence the often good KE) which give the illusion of a skilled by foot player. But Chris has never been as skilled as the perception.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Newman's start to the season has a Monteath feel to it.

I am wondering if those terrible injuries he suffered earlier in his career are starting to catch up with him.

I really hope not.

I can only recall one major injury, he broke his leg years ago, but up until missing a few weeks late last year he hasn't had any serious injuries. There's a few blokes at the club who aren't performing up to what is expected of them and they probably need to have a good look at themselves over the next week or so and try to work through it. The club may have lost an opportunity to make Cotchin the captain beginning in 2012.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

If his form continues to fall away at the rate it currently is, I hope the club has the courage to drop him.

Funny thing is Newy was saying preseason he was hoping to move into the midfield rotation. He is barely able to hold down HBF.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Its his inability to have an impact when required.

He just doesn't play the captains game.

As much as I respect Newman, hes the wrong choice for captain.

Cotchin has to get it, heck Rance is looking like a leader as well.

Can't agree. Newman has had a great kick on him. Seen many long pinpointed passes over time.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I have always thought his kicking was overrated and so far this year he is struggling.

I actually do agree that it's his strongest asset... But he doesnt utilise it his his nor the teams advantage. Never has.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

The problem with Newman has always been that he can't or won't run. If he could/did he'd have been a midfielder a long time ago.
