Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Fully agree Spook.

Solid footballer, but if he was more pro-active could have lifted his influence markedly.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Look I know it isn't a fair comparison, but how good would it be to have a guy like Joel Selwood as captain of the club. His last quarter was inspirational today. That's what you want from a leader...someone who rallies the troops and makes them follow him.

Agree.

Not a fan of HBF captains. Games are generally won and lost in the midfield.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

If we're going to rely on one person to inspire then we're never going to be any good. It's a team of leaders you need, I think we're overplaying the captaincy bit a little. The question is not who is captaining at the moment, but who do we have to act as a team of leaders for the future. Appears Cotchin will take over the captaincy in good time. Who do we think has good leadership qualities around Cotchin for the future?

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Newman's loss of pace and suspect fitness make
me think he is injured. That might also explain his rotten kicking.

Good points Goody. I'd say Jack, Rance, Batchelor, Conca, Vickery are all natural leaders. Lids is growing into it, King and Eeevan lead by example. Grimes looks like he will too.

Barnzy, as to where the captain plays, I don't think it matters anywhere near as much as how he plays. Bomber Thompson, John Worsfold, Nick Maxwell, all captained premiership sides from back flanks/pockets. Jezza captain-coached one from a HBF.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Embarrassing that he has Captain Bloods number!!!

Should have number 49 as he is the 49 best player on the list!!!

Hopefully the DUD will be delisted by the end of the year and a last reminder from the Frawley era will be erased from the club!!

Luke Hodge anyone?
Funny you say Hodge, was jus thinking the other day that Hodge sums up were they are an Newy sums up were we are. Can't believe the criticism Newy gets as Captain, I'm far from his biggest fan, but no doubt earnt the right to wear the number 17, it's not his fault J Brown or J Selwood arnt his team mates an his captain, yep limited player an would think never would be seriously considered for AA, however earnt the respect of the men at punt rd that matter an I dips me lid to you Chris......

Agree and same goes to all who were chosen by our coaches and players to be in our leadership group. Who are we to presume to know better.

i acknowledge that he is valued highly internallty as being a good leader. but apart from this, what else does he bring to the table? as i said on this thread the other day, his only really good attibute is his field kicking, and he doesn't even utilise that to his advantage.

i'm just wondering... is anyone able to table a list of his b&f finishes throughout his career?

Last four seasons are:

2011 - missed top ten (due to injury)
2010-2nd (Jack won in last round)
2009-3rd
2008-4th

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I can't find a Matt De thread.
Could Matt De replace Newman in the backline to allow him to push forward and use his long raking kicks.
I recall most players in the Pre season interviews mentioning Matty De as the one to watch this year.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

had a couple of howler games and a few howler kicks
to go along with his nondescript appearances so far....

Sounds like some of the "PRExperts" views differ than the coaching staff. Big surprise there...
No doubt the skipper hasn't had the most auspicious start to the season, but I'm confident he will improve dramatically. Along with a good many of his team mates.

I'm sure Chris takes great pride in his performance and relishes the responsibility of leading the club.
No doubt he expects his standard to be higher than what is currently on display.

The only thing that pisses me (and others) off is, his usual detractors have reason in their minds, to get the knives out once again. The same people who are loath to acknowledge when he does play well.
Usually the way, some people just love their "whipping boys", the captain not excluded.
Sure, some criticism may be warranted, but its the glee that accompanies some posts.
Pathetic really, says a lot about those posters.

That's the bit that gets me as well. I am critical of some player''s performances as well, we all are, but I immediately want that Richmond player to stick it up everyone and dominate the next week.
It just seems to me that some on here would rather be right about a player than see some Richmond players actually do well.
Perhaps that is wrong but it's certainly the feeling I get sometimes.
