Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

Get real. Newman for a long time was the only decent kick in our backline.

I am concerned past injuries, more than form, are causing his problems.

Had some pretty horrific injuries in this time.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

The midfielders worked better in this game, albeit against The Dees, we are working on getting a different back line, his role may be changing, we know he is the stop gap Capt. until someone else steps up, I think he is going ok.

Just my opinion.

I'm hoping he's just reached an age where he takes a couple of rounds to hit his straps. A fit and firing Newman will help Lids' move to the midfield.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Short memories by many on this thread. He has been voted and chosen as Captain by his peers and coaches for reasons the naysayers are completely unaware of as they are not inside the club. Newy has also been an excellent user of the ball over many years and has been our only consistent performer in defence. He has had to play in a substandard team nurturing kids playing well before they should be expected to and has dealt with numerous off field dramas (coach changes) in the process. He has done this with never a dummy spit or meltdown. He has carried himself with poise and dignity on and off the field. Many on here should temper their melodromatic rantings in respect for the man and also the office that he holds as our Captain.

Yes, he may be down a bit on form and may have missed a few targets but he has been far from our worst and I look forward to reading humble pie the next 25 possie game where he kicks 2 from outside 50 after 2 bounces playing off a HBF.

Finally, this may indeed be his last year as Captain. We do have a gun leader in the making who is obviously earmarked for the job. This will happen regardless of a PRE lobby to burn him at the stake. It will happen not because he is a bad leader nor as a punishment. It is not going to be Newies fault nor the end of his carrier when this is happens. We may just have another leader who is now ready to take this team to another level.

If Newman hasnt been our worse then I'd like to know who has been?

I'm not expecting Joel Selwood-type games but SOME type of contribution to the side would be nice.

One of the more ridiculous statements written here, and that's saying something.
Did Newy beat you at marbles or something at school Ian?

Another big over reaction from the anti Newman clique, with many sheep following.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I was at my first live game for the season yesterday, and one of the things I was looking for was some sign of what the problem might be for Newmo. IMO he is clearly down on form. He kicked only on his left, and only over 20-30 metres. It might be wishful thinking, but there may be an injury. I think he has been a stoic and sure leader for the club and I hope he comes good.

Great post - agree with all of this. Well done

You obviously haven't been watching the games. Clearly Newman has provided more than Edwards, Jackson and Vickery in all three games. But that is not the point. The point I have made is that posters wanting him dropped, sacked or made sub are premature, harsh and lack understanding of the player and his office. You do not sack or sub a Captain unless you want to undermine the leadership structure of the team. Just look at the leadership debacle unfolding at Melbourne. The skipper may be dropped for consistent bad form if it is deemed so by the selection committe but we are not even close to that happening. So can all the Newman haters stop frothing at the mouth and take a deep breath or three.

Send him to GWS with all the other washed up hacks!!!

You are slipping if that's the best you can come up with.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Him & Vickery have been the most disappointing so far this year.
His strength is his kicking, but this year that has been his biggest downfall..
Can't wait for Cotchin to take over..
Captain: Cotchin
Vice captains: lids & batchelor

Down on intensity.. Please tell me that is sarcasm. When has he ever played with intencity?? Worst captain by a mile and the quicker he is stripped of it the better we will be.

Newman and Deledio are the most overrated players in the league.
tossa yes you

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

frawleyudud you need to learn some manners ........ probably never played a game of any sort in your life.........flogger

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Newman has had a pretty tough run since getting the captain gig. He's not a flash player, but he
has over time gotten the job done. I'm prepared to cut Newman some slack, I think this year
will be his last as Captain, as Cotch will have the role next year. To me its far more important that
Cotch, Dusty, Lids, Conca etc move up a cog this season, makes a Captain's job a lot easier.

Fair post but at the end of the day in this business no matter what your reputation or title, you are only as good as your last game.
Newie is heading into the twilight zone. Has had a poor start by his standards, needs to lift big time.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I agree that he needs to lift TOO but those that seem to be relishing dropping/sacking/subbing our Captain after 3 average games (not good but not discraceful) are way off the mark IMO. He would need at least another 3 games even worse than what he has dished up thus far, before it even being considered and only if the team is losing badly and others such as Edwards, Jackson, Vickery (on performance) have been dropped first. I seriously cannot see this happening.

Fair call.
It was good enough for captain Monteith to sit on the bench in the 1980 grand final then it's good enough for Newman to be doppped. And by the way Monteith was an absolute superstar compared to the plodder Newman!!!
It was good enough for Malthouse to drop his captain Worsfold for a final and he was a REAL leader.
Nothing special about Newman and he would not be missed if he was demoted.

Time to go Newman!!!
