Chris Newman - Needs a big 2005

Fair call.
It was good enough for captain Monteith to sit on the bench in the 1980 grand final then it's good enough for Newman to be doppped. And by the way Monteith was an absolute superstar compared to the plodder Newman!!!
It was good enough for Malthouse to drop his captain Worsfold for a final and he was a REAL leader.
Nothing special about Newman and he would not be missed if he was demoted.

Time to go Newman!!!

What happened to your mighty Dees on the weekend Dribbler? ::)

Newman has had a pretty tough run since getting the captain gig. He's not a flash player, but he
has over time gotten the job done. I'm prepared to cut Newman some slack, I think this year
will be his last as Captain, as Cotch will have the role next year. To me its far more important that
Cotch, Dusty, Lids, Conca etc move up a cog this season, makes a Captain's job a lot easier.
Agree with all of this.
Let's see how things look after at least 3-4 further games before making any call on Newman.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

I just can't see where all this angst against Newy comes from. I watched the Melbourne game again the other night and was looking for all the clangers that I thought he must have had that I obviously missed but couldn't find them. He played pretty well from what I saw.
People tend to forget that being a Club Captain is far more than just playing as skipper on game day. There are responsibilities related to sponsors, the AFL,Coterie groups and the media all of which from i have seen Newy handles really well.
He seems to be very well respected by the playing group and the coaches and he is definitely worth his place in the team.
I just don't see the rush to make Cotchin captain. He has just turned 22 and is still developing his game. Leave all the extra curricular stuff associated with being captain to Newman for now I believe and let Cotch develop further as a footballer, he is a leader on the field anyway and his turn will come soon enough.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

The people who are calling for Newman to be dropped... just being stupid (sorry for the harshness). The players and coaches have enormous respect for him as a leader and player. His form has been a little down but a few quite games shouldn't lead for his sacking or being dropped. No need for Newman to lose the captaincy as long as the players believe in him.

Next year hopefully.

No knock on Newman but Chimp just has IT. The captaincy can take his game to yet another level. Will thrive on the responsibility ILO.

You missed the poor kicks in the 1st half? What game were you watching?

The thing that annoys me about Newman is just the intensity he shows (or lack of). Don't know if he is trying to carry an injury or if he just really is that slow but it would be nice to see him do some gut running to receive rather than living in his back pocket safety net. Maybe sometimes he might actually play on for once!

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

like Newy...he hasnt been great so far from my observations..
at the end of the day as Captain he deserves a certain amount
of respect i reckon...doubly hard when its RFC in my opinion.

I was watching Richmond v Melbourne on 14th April 2012. I am pretty sure that is the game you are talking about isn't it?
All of them? There were a couple amongst a lot by a number of players in a period from half way through the 1st to mid 2nd quarter where we were over using the ball. The way some go on you would think he shanks every kick. Newy has been a very good user for a long time.

I am really happy that we will have Cotchin as our next Captain and I believe he will be a great Richmond skipper for a long time but that doesn't have to come by denigrating the guy in number 17 right now.

One of the more ridiculous statements written here, and that's saying something.
Did Newy beat you at marbles or something at school Ian?

Another big over reaction from the anti Newman clique, with many sheep following.

why is this ridiculous? i would argue people in the 'pro newman' corner are over the top in their support for him, and that he doesn't cop enough criticism on PRE.

once again, i'll pose the question, apart from being a good leader and a decent kick (which IMO he has never fully utilised to his advantage in over 180 games), what does he bring to the table? one thing that he has been consistent with in his career is that he has never dominated a game in his career and he has always lacked intensity. but the most damning thing is that for as long as i can remember, richmond have always been dominated by small forwards kicking bags against us. so which RFC small defender has been the common denominator in this over the years?

Like Ian said when he is not spot on with his kicking he is basically useless. Doesnt win major contested footy, not a big tackler, cant shut down the best small forwards.

Playing like a really really poor mans Joel Bowden atm.

that would be Joel Bowden who was a dual AA CHB, because he played on the best big forwards week in week out, held his own and generated a lot of drive at the same time?

I can only go on what I see and I strongly believe you are wrong.

So at least he has some good attributes, generous acknowledgement from you there Ian. I'd be one to admit, he's yet to hit his straps this season. Gee, it's 3 games old.

But for the banshees whinging about his poor games and poor kicking it's really over the top. Actually on last weeks game, he did miss two kicks in the 1st qtr, and one in the 3rd (?) as he was being tackled.

Getting back to your statement re small defenders, a lot of the problem (imo) is the lack of defense from the on-ball brigade. There have been enough posts on our lack of a competitive ruckman, but also the mids have been oh so poor defending and the ball moves out of the centre far too easily.
Also given the quality of the backline in the past, it's hardly surprising, when all and sundry have identified our lack of (including development of) kp defenders, or that they're either undersized, inexperienced, not good enough etc. Which exacerbates the pressure of the whole defensive group. Having or getting a semblance of continuity and decent personnel into the backline, builds some confidence in that players have that trust in their team mate. It goes a long way.
I'm sure all would agree we're still a major work in progress all over the field.

Some experienced players who (generally) kick well and provide good leadership on and off the field are invaluable to such a young group. Common sense really.

Golden child Cotch is among those who hardly seems to be taken to account on his missed kicks, lack of defense et al. poor kicking eff % excuses , "because he's under pressure" blah blah blah. I do acknowledge his "greatness" in other aspects of his game.
Well here's the thing, our bloody backline's been under more pressure.

Here's a question for you. Who would you prefer Chris Newman or Nick Maxwell in your team?
One's a backman, premiership captain and the other one's a backman, captain yet to play in a final.

Me, I'll take Newman every day of the week.
I anticipate the replies. ;)

Yes that Joel Bowden, that's why I said really really poor man's version of him.

I was never a big Joel fan especially when he went kick chasing but he was always up for taking the 1st or 2nd best forward from the opposition and did a reasonable job giving away size. Who's Newman playing on? 4th or 5th best forward? He should be doing a hell of a lot more than what he does imo.

Fair enough.

I do think Newman has improved his defensive play markedly over the last few years, and as far this year I reckon he has done ok. Paid attention to him when watching the Pie game replay. He played well IMO, excluding some poor kicking.

Leysy stopped reading when you got all confused & tangled up when talking about the Chimp.
