"Newy was crap at the weekend..........only got 85 touches, only stopped 75 goals and only laid 94 tackles, albeit with a broken leg. Better get rid of him. We don't need his type at Richmond."

I dont think he would have 94 tackles in his career let alone 1 game but carry on! I like your delusional posts for a laugh.

Smart people SUPPORT their leader through thick and through thin.

Its called COMMITTMENT....which seems to be lacking among many posters who constantly criticise Newy....regardless of his on field leadership that ALL the Tiger players love.

rubbish. you of all people should understand that this is an internet forum and players are not immune from criticism here. as skipper, chris newman deserves a lot more scrutiny that than say... someone like mattty white

Pffft, yep all 11 possesions of Newman was such a great effort ::) I gave him slack because of the injury so didnt bother bumping the thread but he's previous 2 games were only so-so aswell. Dea had a better game yesterday then he has had all year which is saying something.

was Newman beaten at all in a one-on-one contest? did he make any mistakes?

amazing how many people still judge a performance on possession totals. AFL has gone way past that.

Pity that the only valid informed scrutiny is that which comes from his coach. Dimma has nothing but praise for his captain, thinks Newy's a ripper, unlike many internet experts.

He is a rebounding defender so I'd say that stats are pretty important in terms of his value to the side, compared to a Morris etc.

Was ok defensively on the weekend but made Ashton Hams look like a superstar the week before though.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Even if I was extremely drunk I could never imagine Chris Newman being a premiership captain. He is just an honest plodder. Time he got the tap on the shoulder at the years end but will never happen with Hardwick as coach.
Tuck is the same. Just cant ever see him ripping a Dane Swan or a Chris Judd apart in a big final!!!
The club is riddled with mediocrity and rewards mediocrity!!!

Newman is no worse than Maxwell and Harley and they hoisted the cup three times between them.

I assume you are talking about the same Ashton Hams who has 11 possessions that game, 6 of which came after quarter time? He kicked 2 goals, one of which came from a high tackle from rance or Dea as i recall. I guess his game was better than the 23 possessions Newman had and the terrific rebound he provided from defence that night.
Until he bobbed up and kicked a late goal I thought Hams had been subbed off he was so quiet.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

What about Newman specifically means that he can't be compared to a premiership captain?
Aside from the obvious lack of a premiership.

If it's an issue of ability, compared to maxwell, newman is a better kick, a better competitor, a better mark, and actually plays creatively from the backline, not just as a 'loose defensive stander in a spot guy'.

Tom Harley was a great stopping defender, but again, Newman has him beat in the various specific footballing skills.

In terms of prowess, Newman is easily comparable, if not better than a number of recent premiership captains.

The only question, then, is that of his leadership. And that is absolutely evident in the way the players speak of him. They love him, they listen to him, and they play for him. And he gives every single bit of fight and effort in every contest he can get to. He has, perhaps, lost a bit of speed and zip in the last couple of seasons, but he still has more than Lingy did last year.

Granted, he hasn't, (Until now) played in a side capable of making a premiership, but he's more than capable now, with the support of a gun midfield and a (finally) working administration, of becoming exactly what Maxwell, Harley, and Ling all were. And probably better.

I was talking about football ability. See Coburgtiger's post below.

Re: Chris Newman (Merged)

Can someone please tell me why they think it is necessary to bag our skipper?

Newman was thrust into that role in the midst of the Wallace fiasco and handled that with great maturity and poise. He seems to be enormously respected by the players and the Coaches, he represents our Club incredibly well in the media and he has lead during a time when 30 new players have arrived and clearly been a major part of moulding a great team spirit.

There is a lot of one dimensional analysis of his worth as Captain on this thread. Newy bleeds yellow and black I reckon and i would love to see him lead a Richmond team in a final, he deserves it.

Newman is not there to win us a flag, he's there to stabilise the playing group. He's not a flash Judd, I for one do not want a Judd
to Captain my team thank you very much. I want a player who can play, who is a team player, puts his head down and body on the
line week in week out. If I could have Roger Dean as Captain today, I'd do it. It was Dean that oversaw the rebuilding of RFC back
in the mid 60's. Newman to me is a similar captain to Dean, not much said, hardly see him on the idiot box, he lets others do the
talking and just gets on with what Dimma and the Board deem he needs to do when representing RFC.

RFC is rebuilding, Chris Newman will not be playing when this group is in contention for a flag. That said Newman's role is still important,
as its a transitioning role, its our gun player Trent Cotchin that should be the next Captain of RFC and yes I can see a bit of Roger Dean in
the Cotch!!!!!!
