Leigh Mathews had identified that his side wasn't doing enough gut running at training so he introduced a new training session about 6 weeks ago.

CIRCLE WORK! :o :rofl

It's lifted the movement and work rate of his players by up to 40% apparently. The gut running his players are getting out of 40 to 60 minute circle work session has turned his side around. He punishes his players for turnovers during the session via sprints and then re starts the session. It's separated into clockwise and anti clockwise 10 to 15 minute quarters. Players are not allowed to stop under any circumstances.

Of course they still do other sessions along with the circle work.

This is 100% fact, but it's very interesting when you consider our current situation.

1) We don't seem to be able to run out games.

2) We have no options or movement up the ground.

3) We struggle to hit targets late in games due to lack of fitness.

Could it be this simple??

our training seems REALLY repetitive.. i never see n e thing new when i go to watch (this year about 7 times).. need more flat out running... hopefully we start our preseason as early as the roos did last year..

we need to be able to run out a game.... I say anything is better than the weak tanks our guys currently have

name one game we have played out 4 quarters in this year

Ah well, I suppose everything else I did as a kid seems to be back in fashion.

You know sometimes I think that coaches like Wallace and Eade make things to complexed. The time they take explaining how they wont players to play, well the sessions over before you know it!

I think it's worth a try, give the boys the footy but make them run hard for an hour each session with the ball.

Keep it simple stupid!

Always liked circle work.

David Parkin's comment on this recently comes to mind. "When we played in straight lines we practiced in circles. Now that we train in straight lines, we play in circles."

Really? There are building pyramids again?

Sorry, I don't mean it, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

I was thinking about this and tend to agree. we will need to make something happen early next season. Our membership levels and income stream may depend on this. Even a win or two in the pre-season cup will be important. Those of us who part with hard earned money need something to give us hope.

Next thing it will be kick to kick at the start of training to help with contested marks. Unbelievable

Reminds me about the joke of the Singapore Soccer team. Asked to do a drill, dribbling the ball around witches hats resulted in the witches hats being 6-1 up after 15 minutes.
