Hey has anybody seen the movie "City of God"? Great, great movie. I don't think it's playing at the commercial cinemas, but it should be at Nova Cinema and Cinema Europa. Best movie I've seen in a while. Warning, it's foreign. LOL.

I haven't even heard of it John, fresh out of movie cinemas up here, ha.
What's it about?
The most cultural I've been recently was buying Chris Wilson's new cd. I'm pretty happy with that purchase. :D

Its a slice of life film spanning about 15 years from the 60's to the 80's centering on a Brazilian ghetto where lawlessness reigns and how the emergence of cocaine led to gang warfare and the disintegration and dehumanisation of the city's youth. It focuses on a few characters and their journey from childhood to adulthood.

I know it sounds cheesey, and just like another gangsta flick, but it's unlike anything you've ever seen before. It's nothing like the hollywood no-brainers that have been flung around over the years. Its one of the most shocking films you're likely to watch, and it really gets you to question humanity and human worth.

Thanks John, It sounds the kind of movie I like. I tend to prefer the smaller production companies warts and all than the Hollywood glitz when it comes to movies.
Where are the two cinemas you mention?

Rosy,
Nova is in the Lygon St. food court, Carlton near Melb. Uni.
Cinema Europa is a separate section in most Village cinemas in Melbourne + suburbs.

Sounds like a good and wothwhile film to see, JohnF.

Thanks mighty, beat me to it. The Cinema Europa I watched it in (last night) was on Chapel St. in South Yarra, part of the Jam Factory complex.

S.B.S is showing City of God tonight at 9.30pm, is worth watching if you hav'nt seen this film.

You can get it on DVD from most retail outlets, like JB Hifi.

GREAT movie... I absolutely love it. Don't be afraid if you don't like foreign movies.

The production is great, and the story is very entertaining and eye opening. And yeah, it is based on a true story.
