Regarding Cleve Hughes,
(This was originally a reply to another thread.)
He certainly wasn't a one-trick pony when he arrived at Richmond.
The fearures of his play, when vice-captain of the SA U18 rep side was his mobility and ability to bring others into play. He was a dead-eye *smile* when kicking for goal, and got the hard shots from an angle.
When all the juniors were asked to put on weight, Deledio & Hughes were the ones that succeeded.
In his 1st year, he was given 3 Richmond games, averaged 4 disps & 1 goal a game.
In his 2nd year, he was given 7 Richmond games, averaged 8 disps & maintained 1 goal a game.
In his 3rd year, he has only been given 2 games, averaged 9 disps per game, though only the 1 goal in the two games. He played both forward & back.
If you look at his statistics you will see that he has a higher handball/total disposal ratio than most other tall forwards at the RFC.
In 2006, at Coburg, his 1st year, Cleve played 12 games for 17 goals, plus 5 reserves games for 23 goals.
Last year, at Coburg, his 2nd year, he played 14 games, many portions of which were in defence, yet still kicked 18 goals, plus his one game & 5 goals in the Coburg reserves GF.
This year, at Coburg, his 3rd year, he has played 9 games for 23 goals.
From my view, Hughes isn't being given a fair go. He is clearly being unfairly treated by the match committee.
To me, it's the classic case of the golden boy coming from being a leader at an affluent school in an affluent suburb of a different city.
He has come to Melbourne enthusiastically, attempting to meet every challenge.
Those who were meant to be his mentors thought they could knock more hardness into him by continually repressing him.
That repression, by his supposed mentors appears to have turned into contempt and repressive behaviour towards him.
Shame really. We drafted a talented boy back then. Never given him a fair go.
And what is more, he's what we really need, a junior mobile tall HF who knew how to bring other players into the game.
Others seem to be getting a chance for superior performance at Coburg. Clearly that doesn't apply to Cleve Hughes.
And, BTW, damn those who won't give him that fair go.
