co-incidence or not

Agree 74,

& we now hopefully have the young players i.e Lids, Chimp etc that can take over this mantle.

We haven't had any young players of elite ilk to lead the clubs hopes for a long long time.

Evo Jnr loves Lids and the Chimp.(sounds like a name for a 70s drama)

Richo,meh.

Go Chimp!

This is a good point. I still maintain people love Richo because his passion and love of the club is as transparent as their own. In an era of professional footballers, this is something very rare, and its only the likes of Hird and Buckley who not only become the figurehead of the club, but they become a representitive of everything the clubs stands for and believes in.

People love Richo because he is Richmond. He will move on one day soon, and the club will hurt, but we will all move on as we did in the past when players like KB moved on.

I can't remember any emotional goodbyes to Richmond players in the past, but when Richo finishes it will certainly be one. And not just for Richmond supporters.

We really should start lobbying the AFL to make sure every last game of the season is our home game at the G. Though seeing we're expecting finals for the next few years, preparing a "Goodbye Richo" match isn't going to be easy.

Very well posted Tiger74.

What I liked most about this thread is that it ends in a very great point.

We all yearn for premiership success, but when does focus become so great that it actually works to the detriment of the club itself.

Sometimes that detriment can work to rob the club from achieving its eventual success.

This is something we can all take something from, whether it be Richo, Miller, or whoever.

Given what Matthew Richardson has given to this club and us as supporters/members since 1993, I would still hope that we can have some success (such as at least reaching the finals) over the next 2 years with Richo still in the team.

I can't see any reason why he wouldn't play a role, especially if the overall quality of the team can be improved.

To my kids, who started going weekly to the footy at exactly the time Richo debuted, Richo's retirement will be the end of youth itself.

To them, he is a god.

As for the coincidence thing, Richo still carries our forward line because there is absolutely nobody on our list with the class/size/experience/dominance to replace him.

We have maybe one of the trio or quartet that we will need to cover him on the list right now IMO.

The argument that we could manufacture another club hero through marking is flawed IMO.

The reason we love football is because performance is very public and measurable, it’s not like selling a can of coke. That picture of Richo coming off the ground, blood streaming down his face is worth a thousand marketing campaigns.

Also flawed is arguing that we would have got a lot for trading Richo in 04. At the time he was a nearly 30 CHF with an increasing history of soft tissue injury who was a terrible shot for goal. That’s second round pick material at best. Who would now trade 5 more years of Richo for Dean Polo?
