Coaches or players fault? [Merged]

Re: Time for players to stand up - NOT THE COACH -

I still believe this is the year we had to have.

"Beacon in the storm" comment. The build up over recent years was indicating this.

Look at Bomber Thompson, as much as I dislike him, he struggled early and was subject to criticims and alleged reviews, but he had the fortitude to stick to his guns and game plan and look at the cats now. They are still yet to prove themselve on the big stage, but you have to acknowledge the turn around. Same with the Hawks, but if we can be in a similar position in a couple of years I'd be happy.

Please don't use Geelong as an example - they are light years ahead of us in talent (and last year was a blessing in disguise for them by picking up a future Brownlow Medalist in young Selwood.

I have seen too many quick fixes over the years and its pretty obvious they never worked so I for one am prepared to endure a bit of pain as much as I hated last night.

Wallace has recognised that recruiting as been poor in the past hence the impending changes to the recruiting department. It is as obvious to them as it is to us and changes are being put in place to try and rectify that deficiency. Will it work, who knows only time will tell.

As I have said many times this is the first time in years I have seen anyone put any real plan in place with a view to the future and I am prepared to give that plan time to evolve. Is there no golden answer. It takes time to evolve

Good summary Gus - we sit side by side on this. We keep walking the current path for another couple of years at least. Those calling for Wallace's head already seem to have forgotten what 25 years of that got us. Who do we take instead, Connolly, Daniher or some newbie to go through the same "magic" again?

Players follow the instructions set by the coaches.
Therefore, I put my money on the players either not understanding the instructions, or alternatively following them perfectly. If it's the former then we have selected dumb players, or they have no respect for the coaches. This is not their fault, they did not make the employment offer!! If it's the later then this fits perfectly with top draft pick strategy.
Also, interesting comment from Kane re "we'll see in the next 5-7 games who really wants a spot" Does he actually think he will keep his by virtue of being the captain? I see other players having the greater potential to lead (and with more skill). Will Wallace follow his own edict?

Its Terry.
A blind fool could see that our list was crap and yet he has only cut a few players over his time at Richmond.
3 picks in the draft before last year was and still is a joke.

Come on people how many players will Terry cut this year?
I think it will only be 4 or 5 and that is just not going to cut it.

The St. Kilda game showed that the players can kick the ball properly. HArdly a turnover in sight.
Yet the next two games have been horrible.
It was interesting to watch leads to the boundary were ignored on Sunday. Why did players persist on doing this instead of heading into the middle.
Presumably they were not happy with the way they were asked to play. Or disappointed with the performance of the senior players!!
I believe that every error needs to be punished. Too many players are not benched for errors. That it took till the last quarter against the Roos for Bowden to be benched.
Johnson similarly this week.
Tuck not being told time and time again to stop kicking too high.
Treat them like kids until the behave like adults.
All players must have skill to be selected. So the problem must be in the way they are coached in that their drills don't hold up under pressure.
Richmond needs leaders to stand up.
Reputations are not enough. Play diffferent players and if they don't do what they are told then get rid of them.

The only positive I have read recently was the rags article, and for two reasons. The first, any player on the list after reading that article would hardly feel secure for next year - so we might see some real change. The second was the acknowledgement that we are struggling to adapt from tempo year to gut running year. We don't have anyone on our list that I know of who can gut run a game out like a Brad Johnson, Nick Stevens, or Cousins or Harvey etc. We lose a lot of final quarters because the opposition dig deeper and find more.

Which makes us in the main a team of unfit stick figures. BUT at least if Wallace is talking about it, which means he knows and if a problem is known at least its some reassurance that it is being worked on.

Sorry TM, but that's not entirely true. He's cut 23 or 24 players in the past 3 seasons, just as many as Hawthorn, so he has cut deep. As for the year before last, we only drafted three players in the National Draft (JON, Cleve and Cass), but we also picked up Patrick Bowden in a trade and Matthew White in the PSD.

I would imagine that there would be up to 6 changes at the end of the season. Whether that's enough or not remains to be seen.

Rather intersting that I pick up the sun today and I read that Wallace says we need more players with better disposal

IIRC I read the same thing After round 3 last year when we lost to West Coast

18 Months on and what has changed

NOT ONE BLOODY THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well we've recruited Connors, Collins, Casserley and Edwards for one thing.
