I agree that many people on this forum post on perception rather than performance, and not just with JON. When he came to Richmond, we stated that he was a project player and set about completely changing the role he played as a junior. I'm not saying he'll make it, but he's certainly there at VFL level which for a good part of last year you couldn't say!
The next step is the hard one, but things like disposal have improved and maybe playing him forward is a solution to his decision making issues. It certainly wouldn't hurt our forward line to have some tackling tenacity!
That ground doesn't suit the way Rance plays. When he's got space to break and create, he's a totally different player. He was caught out a few times trying to create and having the ball come back to Limbach through team mates skill errors upfield. Keogh at times looked like he was playing kick to kick with someone 2 post codes away on the outer wing.
Of the others, Coughlan and Meyer are two others that would have both been suited to a ground where you don't have a glut of 15 players around you. Meyer because he's creative, and Cogs because he's not satisfied with just handballing out of a pack, but likes to get himself clear to ensure the disposal is effective. There were times when getting clear was going to be impossible.
It wasn't Graham's best game, but he has had some good ones in the second half of the year. Cartlidge was good throughout the game and i thought his tap work in the seniors wasn't bad. Whether we keep him or not i'm not sure but i don't think he's done himself any harm this year. He did play in the VFL state side so he wasn't going too bad throughout the year.
Hughes presented well when the opportunities were there, and had one free kick paid against him for a push in the back that was a complete joke. He is converting virtually everything and has improved from last year and thats all you can ask. Similar improvement and a better run with injury will see him as a pretty handy forward next year.
I'm not a Conners knocker but anyone who believes that he doesn't over do the flashy stuff is kidding themselves. This guy is a really intelligent footballer with a truckload of ability. He's intelligent about his positioning etc, so it's very frustrating to see him not pick his moment better. I think he really is holding himself back. He's very young still, so i guess it will come, and when it does he will be a great pick up particularly considering where we got him in the draft. I'm probably extra critical of him only because this guy could be so danmed good, so in a sense i guess it's a backhanded compliment.
Collard was dangerous on occasions, not as dangerous as previous weeks where he was not only kicking goals, but creating them as well. His front and square crumbing around goal is something our side has lacked for over a decade! He's one that i hope at least stays as a rookie. He's definitely improved from the first half of the season, and finished the last 5 or 6 games on fire. He's another that if the improvement curve continues will be more than handy next season.
Cam howat had some good games late in the season but i think he might find that early season suspension extremely costly!
Lastly, i wish some of our listed players had the closing speed when tackling that some of the Coburg boys showed. There were a couple of Frankston players that were mowed down so quick they didn't know what hit them.
Coughlan's only mistake was trying to get free before releasing when he had the ball. On any other ground other than that poxy ground that would have been exactly what he should have been doing, and he would have been doing it successfully.
