I know it seems like an understatement but this team desperately needs a victory and not just for the 4 points on offer.

I truly believe we should have won that game last night but like many times towards the end of last year let it slip from our grasp when the game was ours for the taking.

We had all the momentum, were murdering the Aints statistically and really should have run over them in the last quarter, but we didn't...

Missed opportunities again cost us dearly. IMO alot of this comes down to our comfort zone.

Sure we had some injuries to players that affected us slightly but there was more to it than that. I'm not going to mention names but there were some relatively simple shots at goal missed at crucial times towards the end of the match and we see this far too often.

Although it was a dramatic improvement on the previous week we still appear mentally fragile and lack the instinct that makes good football sides. We don't yet know how to win!

We desperately need to start tasting the spoils of victory for our hard work because as everyone knows success breeds success. I'm sure Wallace is well aware of this and won't be too full of praise of our performance last night for this very reason.

If we are ever going to genuinely threaten for a premiership then there are players in this team who simply won't be there because they wouldn't know what to do when they got there.

Comfort zone is a massive obsticle for many of our senior players to overcome and it's for this reason that TW will keep turning the list over. Hard decisions will be made at the end of this year no doubt.

Spot on ToO.

You watch next week against the eagles, the players are likely to be thrashed due to getting comfortable after a close match last night. We have seen it time and time again its so predictable.

remembering the match last night when pat bowden kicked that goal they all congratulated him and each other then they all went back into their shells....good/great teams thrive on the mecurial things done in a match and put the foot down WE do the reverse....WHY?

We lost last night because late in the game, our players were not willing to take the risk of kicking the winning goal and repeatedly chose to kick to the "hot spot" where StKilda cleared it away. We were unlucky with the shocking free given against Simmonds, who actually looked as if he wanted to win the game. Coughlan also missed one he should have kicked but at least he tried to kick it.

At the other end, every Saints player who had an opportunity kicked straight at the goal and a couple went in. They weren't afraid of the consequences of missing.

How long has it been since Joel Bowden took a long shot at goal on the run, or Krakouer took any sort of shot, or Richo stood tall up forward in the last quarter?

These are the reasons we lost.

Oh yeah, there were a few questionable frees given last night, however this one was worst IMO. Whenever a tiger player is outmuscled or bumped out of the way in a marking competition the commentators always refer to the lack of strength or something similar. Simmonds had eyes only for the ball, there was no holding or involvement of the arms at all, he simply bumped the defender out of the way due to his much larger body. I couldn't believe he was penalised for it. I may be ignorant of the rules, however I have watched the replay and completely understood Troy's frustration with the decision!

Completely against the spirit of Football and completely against the letter of the new rules that penalise almost every other contact in a marking contest. If you can't do what Simmonds did last night then all that is left to do is sit back and watch your opponent take an easy mark. Woeful decision!

Don't think it's a comfort zone that affects our boys, think there's actually two zones we need to worry about.

Zone 1 is the lack of ability zone, we've got a few to many players with fairly dodgy skills.

Zone 2 is the lack of self belief zone, compounded by our zone 1 dodgy skills and a few to many floggings in recent years some of the players have that little bit of self doubt gremlin running around inside their heads at times which means instead of taking an opportunity that presents itself they try to dish off to someone else.
Some of our players need to take a leaf out of Nathan Browns book, every time the ball comes down his end of the ground HE WANTS to be the one to get it and be the star match winner.

Isn't your Zone 2 basically the same as a player's Comfort Zone?

........

What value is "hard work" when every other club works just as hard, but some obviously work a lot smarter and get greater value out of their "hard work"?

The days of low-skilled clubs being able to make a decent fist of a season by busting their guts a bit more than their opponents are fading into memory, it is the professionalism and efficiency of the smart clubs that firstly gets them into the finals and then gives them a chance of actually achieving the ultimate success.

Until we leave the 1980's mind-set of "just work harder" behind, things like last week (as well as this week) will continue to occur, that is one of the fundamentals that must be acknowledged if Richmond is to truly progress.

This is a thread about our players Comfort Zones not "hard work" or antiquated training methods dave.
Geez why don't you just pick a couple of words and then respond completely out of context.

We were in a position to win the other night and we got there because we worked hard to get back in the game and were outplaying our opponents. We had the momentum and really should have won the game. However again we failed to take our opportunities as we did on a number of occassions late last season.
I'm not sure why that is and am looking for comments on our current mental application, not our 1980s mindset of "just work harder".

I don't really see how your point is revelvant to the thread? Or are you just playing PRE devils advocate as usual?

Yes, remember that incident very well. An absolute disgrace.

I was going berzerk in the stands.  >:( >:(

to rub it in st kilda kicked a goal on the rebound.

this is a good thread. tigers80 mentioned how the boys went into their shell after p bowdens freak goal. he made a great point. why do we never fire up after an inspirational piece of play? remember cogs courageous mark running with the flight of the ball? we didn't lift after that neither.

I always think the same thing.

Why not fire up after Wills injury or Browny's last year for example?

The players are upset for them and just go flat instead of growing more legs and a feirce determination to win at any cost.

This has always frustrated me. :bash :bash :bash :bash :bash :bash :bash :bash :bash

Wallace said the same in one of his after match quotes saying how we continually fail to take advantage of opportunities to put he game out of the oppositions reach or even force them to take risks to catch up.

That SIMMONDS incident was disgraceful. When you looked at it in slow motion the St.Kilda player looks to have been the one making the intial contact where as Simmonds basically held his ground to hold the mark. There was no second or seperate motion that they keep talking about. He simply held his ground, put his hand up and took the mark. Big Bully ;D

Agree Gus. Simmonds was simply penalised for being too big. Ridiculous decision.

The Simmonds decision was ordinary. Especially the way Hudgton was all over Richo early in the game.

But I did notice Nathan Brown was scragging and holding from behind a lot on Friday night, and was penalised in the last quarter as well. Maybe it's a confidence thing with him, he holds his opponent back, because he doubts his speed off the mark or something. But he wasn't doing it last year, and he may get targeted for it.
Admittedly, Baker is an annoying little arse, but Brown will need to be careful if he's going to keep playing this way.

Not really I equate a comfort zone with not being willing to put in the extra little bit of effort required to do the best job you possibly can, with a lack of self belief you don't think you're up to the task so either hesitate before proceeding or look for excuses not to do or complete the job at hand.
Tarrant against the Dawks would be an example.
He missed four set shots in the first half and then started to dish off every time he got the pill, as a result he set up three or four goals and with the team on a roll his self belief rose and he wound up kicking one himself, he managed to shake off his match day gremlin by contributing in other ways.
I think there are plenty of our guys that are a bit fragile and thats why opposition sides get an unstopable roll on against us or we tend to get whacked for a heap of games in a row.
