PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Recently, I've fallen in love with the Footywire site. I love how it gives you the ability to compare the stats of two players at a time when the players were the same age. I've done a few recently and with some interesting results....see below.

1. The old chestnut...Lids v Judd: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1484&tid2=4&pid2=109&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O

Lids is averaging slightly more possessions a game 23.0 v 22.3, more marks 5.2 v 3.2, same goals and fewer tackles 3.3 v 2.2. Overall you would have to say, statistically, that they are very even at the same age and, if anything, Lids is slightly ahead due to possessions and marks. What is interesting is that Judd would have had one or more of Cousins and Kerr around him to take the attention off him whereas Lids is copping all the attention at the moment, with only Foley really diverting any from Lids.

2. Nathan Foley v Daniel Kerr: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1477&tid2=19&pid2=110&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O

Again, very even at the same age. Axel averages slightly more possessions 27.2 v 27.1. Goals are surprisingly close with Kerr ahead 0.5 to 0.4. Tackles are even at 3.6. Kerr averages way more frees for ::) What the stats don't show, however, is efficiency of possessions which may give more idea (kerr obviously being a silky user of the footy but would be interested in the difference).

3. Jack Reiwoldt v Nick Riewoldt: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1731&tid2=16&pid2=63&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O

Nick ahead in possessions but Jack not far behind in marks and goals. Jack with more tackles per game. Clearly Nick is ahead at the same age and his greater possessions would be attributable to his bigger engine (almost Richo-like).

4. Jack Riewoldt v Jonathon Brown: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1731&tid2=20&pid2=403&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O

Jack stacks up well against Brown. Slightly fewer possessions 11.4 to 12.1 but Jack averages more goals per game 1.2 to 0.7 and, surprisingly, more marks per game 7.6 to 5.1. Also more tackles per game 2.0 v 1.0. I reckon Jack is developing well and is on target to be an elite forward in the AFL if he develops at a proportionate rate.

5. Mitch Morton v Steve Johnson: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1526&tid2=10&pid2=479&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O

Mitch averages one less possession per game 14.0 to 15.0 but more marks, more goals, more behinds and more tackles. Old softy Johnson gets more frees for per game.

6. Trent Cotchin v Gary Ablett Jnr (at 18): http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=2302&tid2=10&pid2=230&type=A&fid1=A&fopt1=18&fid2=A&fopt2=18

Gablett looks like a hack in comparison, with a similar number of games to the chimp but half the possessions (16 v 8.0), similar goals, same tackles. At this rate, if Gablett is racking up 45 possies a game currently, when the chimp is 25 he'll be racking up 90 possies a game :hihi

Finally....for a bit of controversy. After seeing JON this season for Coburg and for Richmond on the weekend, I reckon he could turn out to be a similar player to Ryan o'Keefe (don't laugh >:() Same height at 188cm. JON slightly smaller but I don't believe that JON is only 75kg at the moment. So....

7. Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls v Ryan O'Keefe: http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_compare?tid1=15&pid1=1614&tid2=17&pid2=377&type=A&fid1=O&fid2=O (based on JON's stats as a lead-up HF last week...note ROK only played 9 games at JON's age).

More possessions for JON at 11.0 v 10.4 for ROK. Way more marks to JON at 9.0 v 3.7. More tackles to JON at 3.0 v 1.2. More goals to ROK as JON didn't kick any last week v ROK's 1.3 avg. I know the sample for JON is only based on one game, but I reckon there is potential for him in this role and ROK should continue to be used as his benchmark going forward in that role.

Feel free to do your own comparisons and post any interesting results.
