"Competitive" is not good enough

I'm surprised that people didn't take more out of what he said than merely highlighting a single 'nothing' word out of context. If anything, it seems he was referring to individual responsibility, and it's place in the game plan falling apart. I thought such sentiments would be well received.

Perhaps some people need to separate what he said (i.e., nothing much) , from what you're reading into it (i.e., that we don't care about winning).

Agreed, what he said is being misinterpreted.

However one thing I picked up on, the training session was apparently arduous not for tackling and defensive pressure but for its hard running and quick ball movement. Grant Thomas has talked recenty about the 3 main phases of play: when the team is in possession, when the ball is in dispute and when the other team has possession. I might be wrong but it seems to me that Wallace undervalues the 3rd phase, when the other team is in possession, perhaps theorising that if we have the ball enough it doesn't matter. Yet its been proved time and time again that this 3rd phase is vital especially in finals because this is a principal way pressure is exerted on the other team. Geelong and Hawthorn are both strong in this phase, Carlton were strong in this phase on Thursday night and broke us down.

I mentioned the 3 phases last year in reference to Jordy and his lack of accountable football and got howled down. Many here thought those 3 phases didn't exist anymore.

Good pick up IG - I've thought the same myself (especially during and after the Carlton game).

I don't mind the offensive focus - just so long as we give adequate attention to phase 3.

Its a losers mentality.

Of course it is.

Its like how ugly fat chicks use the "its the beauty inside that counts" line when up against a hot looking chick. :hihi

Total tripe.

Anyways.....I digress....

IanG,
You know why we lack that mate?
We've been a team for years now where the midfield is just that.....a midfield.
They jog around in that centre square like someone is going to ping them off with a sniper rifle if they breach the white line of the square.

We hear pre-season after pre-season the "we're the fittest we've ever been" line only to see in the early rounds laziness and and unfit looking state, and what I saw last Thursday was what I have seen for 10+ years now.

If the players are unfit or lazy....then how can they exert pressure onto a superior team who isn't going to stop and will run their guts out for the 4 quarters?
Quite simply, they can't.

Then to put the cherry on top of the ineptitude cake....when we do actually have the ball, we turn it over.

The result: Years of mediocrity and disappointments.

Great line that one!! ;D

Funny thing is the Tigers have been playing like Prom Queens for over 2 decades. :help

Agree....phase 3 is pathetic really. But we are also quite weak in phase 1...when we have the ball.

Aside from the skill level, which is mediocre at best, I would guess there are "sub-phases" to phase 1, including shepherding, blocking, providing viable options, talking and directing. I am sure I have missed a few other obvious ones. We appear hopeless in these areas.

There is more to phase 1 than simply disposing of the ball (which we struggle to do well anyways).

Yep and they've been regularly taken home and *smile* by the winners for over two decades.

Maybe they should all be called Clara ;D

Totally agree with everything said in this thread so far. There were plenty of expletives coming out of my mouth as soon as I saw that interview with Joel.

"Just be competitive" MY ASS!!! You softc0cks owe us a lot more than that! It's as if the team is heading up to Skilled Stadium thinking this is Mission Impossible.

If this is the mentality of the playing group, then God help us for the remainder of the season.

Well, "Competitive" would be an improvement.

And if we end up more than "Competitive", .......

:partyfest :beer :happy :boldyellow

Not taking away from the legitimate sentiment of this thread, but it was standard media footy speak that representatives from all clubs spout. If he came out and said "we just wanna beat the Cats this week", it would be picked up and used by the opposition as motivation and then he'd be damned if he did, rather damned if he didn't. It's all just standard jargon - we've moved on slightly from the "one week at a time" cliches, but it's the same non-committal rehersed non-answer.

Footy interviews are nearly always pointless excercises in seeing how well a club's media training is identical to the rest of the league...I'll stick with the actions speak louder than words philosophy

Agree Maca - doesnt matter what Bowden said, he was just doing the diplomatic thing. Nothing for the cats to take away from that like big head Kennett done the week before playing the cats.

Just tow the line in terms of this weeks game. No looking back to last weeks game now.

Its a losers mentality. It should be we are going to have a RED HOT GO TO WIN!

Obviously I'd always take a competitive performance against an uncompetitive one.
And I'd take a competeitive performance against Geelong this week against last weeks uncompetitive one against Carlton.

It's not ruling out the prospect of winning this week.

What's wrong with having said that?
