Good pickup Ms Tantie :clap
I hope this match is burnt onto every player’s memory from now on, with the accompanying commentary that repeats over and over again ‘ this is what hard work and dedication and belief can bring – this is the type of culture we want at Richmond and this is the blue print for the rest of your playing days with the club’.
Something was different out there last night. I noticed it at the St. Kilda game and I'm sure it would have been present in the first half at the WC game if I'd been able to see or hear it. :

(yeah I'm pointing the finger at you channel 10 and abc774!)
Something I haven't seen in a long time - even when we were winning in the early Frawley years we didn't have what I felt was a winning structure or have the belief to win long term.
Last night I could see the direction where Terry and Co is trying to steer the team, and by golly gee when everything clicks into place and all four quarters are played in this fashion, watch out world!
It might not be immediate but the team is really trying to make it happen. I don't think our win/loss ratio to date actually reflects how much the team is evolving - give us a full bench at the end of the game, like tonight, and results up to now could have been much different.
Maybe we needed the bulldog loss to kickstart our year? These sorts of benchmarks can make or break a season, and this is the first time (for a veeeeeery long time) I have seen our boys try their guts out for the team in subsequent games, after such an initial flogging.
Kudos to all of the Senior players, who stood up last night. You guys pretty much are having to unlearn every dodgy skill and 'game plan' you have had no choice but to learn until the end of the 2004 season, then learn a new set of skills and plans.
I think it would be akin to having to learn how to be left handed after being right handed all of your life. Hard stuff which takes time, but it's starting to reap rewards. :spin
The kids were revelations too, and have been since they’ve been pressing for selection. You all stood up, and I am really pleased with the way that you have been handled - it's amazing what an extra year does for players like rainsey, jacko, foley and harts. These kids are great because if they do something wrong it doesn’t stop them from trying again, and again and again – which is so refreshing to see. :clap
I am not a fan of throwing ‘all’ of the kids in the deep-end. I think last night proved that if your senior players are prepared to work their guts out, the kids will be able to compliment these efforts without having to be in the firing line all of the time. We don’t want to have to sacrifice them just to appease a few disgruntled supporters, or right past wrongs.
It was the difference in last night’s game.
We had the right balance of experience/youth to get us over the line, and also the hunger to win - a lesson that is a million times more valuable than losing games just so you can finish bottom and get quality players that way :

. Yeah, the young kids get the games under their belt if they are blooded early a la dawkthorn, but who are they going to turn to when they are struggling? The football personnel can’t do everything. You learn from your peers, and when your peers aren’t that skilled or stronger then it’s a pretty hard road to set out on – both mentally and physically.
I think I like the more balanced approach better
as long as your senior players have the resources they need to attain
their optimum potential (something that I think has been sadly lacking in our Seniors team for a long time – where I feel that Northey was the only shining light in our post 1982 history, and hey! he got us into the finals in his third year, which proves that masterminds do need ‘time’ to weave their magic!).
Every AFL player has the ability to be a match winner if they are handled the right way, and I think all of our players have the ability to be match winners (as we found out last night!) they just need that guidance, fitness, discipline and knowledge (very important – terry and co have more football nouse in their little toes compared to many of our more recent football administrations) and we mustn’t forget that precious commodity ‘time’.
Also good to have these types of games under out belts because they will be bench marks to look back on and refer to when the going gets tough
….......'if we could do it then, we can do it now'!!!!!!!!!! :gotigers
Confidence, belief, support definitely are the key! Next big goal is consistency!
