I have no doubt that the ability to spot up targets, attack the opposition, inspire your team mates and simply have the game played on your terms is as much to do with confidence as it is to do with skill, strength and the like.

Over the off-season we have deliberately been “low-key” and whilst I am generally a believer of “Under-Promise & Over-Deliver” as opposed as to what has transpired in the past (read “Over-promise & Under-Deliver) I have the feeling this low-key approach may have been counter-productive.

Both Essendon & Carlton have had wonderful press in the off-season and both played with a certain belief on the weekend. Confidence is self-perpetuating and I think a few fragile minds at those clubs were massaged with the positive stories emanating from within.

Would we have benefited too from more positive press? The appointment of Bond & Cameron, the record profit, the arrival of Cotch & Rance, return of Coughlan should have provided a platform. Instead this was confined to the back pages the sport section.

At the very least it would have likely resulted in say 2500 more memberships which may not now be taken up or renewed. This means as much as $300k to the bottom line.

I can see both positives and negatives for remaining so deliberately quiet during the break.

Vince Lomarbdi used to have a mantra that to win, you do not attack your opponents weak points, you attack their strong points.

I'd like to see us have the confidence to try this type of approach.

It was the players idea to keep it low key because they were sick of being over hyped and under delivering.

Now they are at least rightly under hyped. :-\

I understand that sentiment and if I was a member of the playing group I would probably prefer that as well. That said, the players are largely beholden to the board & executive and I don't know if we are in the position to "under-sell" at anytime. In light of AFG's impending demise, do you think prospective sponsors (if it comes to that) will be enamoured with our exposure of late (in terms of both volume & positivity)?

Is he available?
