Controversial Rule

There has been a controversial rule change that is not getting enough attention IMO.

On the weekend Crowley was charged under the rule to protect the head of the bloke picking up the ball.

Crowley should never have been charged as he made no contact with the head or neck of Prestigiacomo. But the rule has been changed to include contact that is simply part and parcel of the game.

The panel noted this particular charge is classified as body contact, as the rule covers for contact made to the head/neck or the body from front-on.

Crowley's contact was to Prestigiacomo's shoulder. Completely legitimate football in anybody's estimation. But illegal now.

This rule is sneaking under the radar. It is potentially a much more pernicious rule change than the hands in the back and threatens the fabric of the game.

Dyer'ere, after reading Demetreeooo's call for everyone to take a bex and have a good lie down in relation to the hands in the back rule (debacle), I think its fair to say that he, along with his band of merry megalomaniacs, are tearing the fabric of the game into tiny little shreds.

"When questioned about the many rule changes to our great game, Andrew Demetriou was heard to say, 'It's my train set, I'll break it if I want to.' He was so upset by the negative questioning that he immediately left for a Bex and a bit of a lie down."

and so say all of us.

I cannot believe Crowley was suspended. Buckley wouldn't have been cited and Hird would have got three Brownlow votes for the same thing.

Crowley bumped Presti in the shoulder.

Lunacy.

The game is out of control.

Good to see you responded quickly to the news JD. ;D FWIW Freo didn't fight the one week ban which is odd because they've contested every other one and generally done ok.

No No NO!

It was the mob who went before him that allowed illegalities to enter into the game - that a generation of footballers now believe are legal and how the game should be played.

All Demitriou and his rules commitee are doing is taking the game up to the great level it used to be.

Be fair dinkum - where have the great marks gone like Royce Hart's grab against Geelong and Doug Wades pack marks when playing for both Geelong and North? Where have the silky skills of Baldock, Stewart, Barrot, Clay, Bourke, Bartlett gone?

Where have the magical single handed pick ups that Sproul and Skilton could do?

Where have the one-on-one legal battles like Verdon Howell on Guinane?

Where have they gone - gone because players now scrag and push opponents in the back. Players now jump on a loose ball rather that pick it up neatly and move it on. Players now jump on players rather than bump them form the side. Players use their hands in a marking contest rather than their hip and shoulder to off balance an opponent.

The great dexterity of our game has been removed by a pathelogical mob of previous administrators who believed AFL is all about strength and wrestling- and not about class and deft ball movement.

Nah - the rule commitee and Demitriou are trying to lift the game up to its potential - rather than let it devolve into another mobile wresting match like it is - (like Rugby)

Just ask yourself this question -

Why is it that players like Richo who 10 years ago were able to take a screamer high above the pack (there were 1 or 2 screamers a week back then) - but now young forwards of today struggle in the marking contest because they do not get a one-on-one or a run at the ball - all because they are being illegally attended to prior to the ball being delivered forward. (Which means we are lucky if we get a half screamer once per month).

Our game is going to pot because the rules of the game have not been adhered to for too long.....................My opinion only.....RT

I was arguing this one on Big Footy over the weekend, some were calling for Crowley to get 6-8 weeks! Sheer lunacy.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who can see sense about the incident.

I understand why the umpy paid the free, though with the benefit of hindsight and replays, it should never have even been a free kick, let alone a report and suspension.

Agree, but hands in the back is not the way to fix it. The rule already accomodated it. Its the push in the back that matters and the manhandling of forwards by backmen who have not intention of marking themselves. The contact (high, pursh in the back, or prior to ball being within 5m) is only allowed if it is incidental to a marking contest. Its simple if the backman is not attempting to mark then high contact, push in the back, or early shepherding is simply not allowed.

The problem with hands in the back is it may not constitute a push. On the other hand you can push a player in the back with your arm, shoulder, head, hip and take them out of the contest and its legal. The rule is well intentioned but stupid.
