PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

There has been a controversial rule change that is not getting enough attention IMO.

On the weekend Crowley was charged under the rule to protect the head of the bloke picking up the ball.

Crowley should never have been charged as he made no contact with the head or neck of Prestigiacomo. But the rule has been changed to include contact that is simply part and parcel of the game.

The panel noted this particular charge is classified as body contact, as the rule covers for contact made to the head/neck or the body from front-on.

Crowley's contact was to Prestigiacomo's shoulder. Completely legitimate football in anybody's estimation. But illegal now.

This rule is sneaking under the radar. It is potentially a much more pernicious rule change than the hands in the back and threatens the fabric of the game.
