So true. His defensive mindset has taken the instinctive flair out of these kids.

Even look at Castagna. He is an explosive player off half back. But now they are trying to turn him into a defensive forward. Its madness.

Play the kids in their most natural positions and let them develop FFS.

What he said!

Stop killing our players instinct and flair Hardwick!

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

Hate to say it but Ellis is playing the same bruise free football that I observed at the state carnival.

A few things to consider here, first WA fielded a very weak team this year, most players did exceedingly well against them, but even in that match Ellis didn't really take the game by the scruff of the neck like some of the other first round candidates. His kicking is generally neat but is often lateral or short, not to mention he often tries to be too clever and turns the ball over as a result.

Just going over his stats at TAC level, his KE was 49%, way too low for a player who has a reputation for elite disposal. For someone hailed as a strong mark, he didn't take one contested mark for the season, and his performance in the carnival was ok but not outstanding. He averaged 2 clearances a match, to put that into perspective, Blakely averaged 7.

There is absolutely nothing to suggest Ellis is worth pick 12, I would rather roll the dice on Cockatoo if all the others are off the board.

Corey Ellis is a decent footballer, solid with good disposal, can sometimes get too cute with his worm burners but technically is a very good disposer of the ball. His inside work at TAC level has been good up until now, however his DE dropped off markedly this year and he had some very patchy form throughout the season. Now I understand at the carnival he copped an untimely knee injury which saw his production & efficiency halved, but his earlier games weren't anything to get overly enthused about either. His stats weren't earth shattering, he didn't flip any game on it's head, he didn't pull off anything mercurial either. He is workmanlike, very much in the mould of most of our other second tier mids. He ultimately comes in and fills the 4th-8th best mid role, that's really it in a nutshell and to me it's starting to undersell the value of a first rounder. I don't think I'm alone on that count either, he didn't even get a call-up to the Gold Coast, 17 others did.

Bashing a 20 year old kid playing in a position he properly never played in as a junior.
But him on the wing and once in while Shepard and watch him deliver.
Toooo early to go after him

If people are surprised about his inside credentials then they should go over the tapes of his Vic Metro performances, he simply didn't do enough to suggest he had an inside game which would translate to AFL football. He's being played in defence because there's no way he's ready for the centre square, this is another example of Frank ignoring the evidence before him and speculating based on a few strong TAC games against sub standard opposition.

I watched Darcy Parish today and used him as a benchmark for where Ellis stands as a potential onballer, the reality is we will have to teach him some inside mongrel because at the moment it just doesn't come naturally. Parish is also one year behind in development, for a second year player the signs are incredibly worrying.

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

This might sound harsh but it was disappointing he did nothing but stand around like a little school boy whilst Viney was wrestling Rance after the Watts hit. What's Viney 20 , 21 years old? He took it up to Rance. He had no fear and no issues about taking on a bloke 10 kegs heavier than him.

Ellis just stood there watching. When instead he should have been flying the flag for his teammate irrespective of what he done.

That passage in a nutshell typifies our draftees of late. Nice kids with zero mongrel in them.

Would love to see some players who show a bit of mongrel attitude about them (that doesn't mean dirty players) recruited to the Club.
Those sorts of players who simply hate losing a contest or being beaten by an opponent ... those sorts of players who keep digging deep to be competitive beasts ... those sorts of players who keep on having a crack because that's the only way they know how to play the game.
Seems the modern-day young footballer is programmed and trained as and to be an elite athlete rather than as a fair dinkum footballer encouraged to act on instinct and show individual flair.
Maybe, for my way of thinking, there are just too many 'systems' involved in footy nowadays.

He needs to get emotionally invested and flick the switch quick or he is toast.

And will live to regret it

Not harsh mate, it was embarrassing.

Well to this point you have it nailed but - were not those stats and facets you have mentioned fully available to the recruiting department?
Who went in the spots immediately after him? Not Cockatoo i hope he is really starting to develop now in their system

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

Was diabolical. Bring in Short instead, at least he plays with some confidence and intent and desire.

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

From the write ups..

RICHMOND

12. Corey Ellis (W Jets), 185cm, 76kg

Left-footed, medium midfielder who is a star at the clearances with his clean hands and courage.

Is that the write-up from Francis Jackson's notebook?

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

Jake King had obvious limitations as a player, but this is one valuable aspect he brought to the team that was lacking from most others.

I'm still backing him. Didn't think it was a big a deal.

I'm still hopeful also, Snake ... but he does look a little out of his depth and overwhelmed at the moment.
Just wondering if he has a natural inclination/instinct for the contest or whether he is one of those outside players who can deliver the ball well, given time and space?

Re: Welcome to the RFC - Corey Ellis

Dan Jackson as with Push up ,have left a massive hole ,these guys had the agro we currently lack in spades , we would be a different side if they were still playing.

Not harsh. It was very disappointing.
Took him down a notch in my eyes.
I don't care if you're built like a twig. It's all about attitude and Corey didn't fly the flag when he need to.
In fact he's often looked intimidated out there with the big boys.

I just think he has zero self belief, is self conscious out there.

Like a shy kid..
