Cotchin hip injury/surgery

That their first thought was about risking players when we should be losing games,

Rather than the long term welfare of the player.

And they don't appear to recognise it can also be in the player's best interests to get as much game time as possible (and a full pre-season).

There are a lot of negatives when you rest someone. It should only be done when the negatives outweigh the undeniable positives - not simply at the first sign of any niggle.

There are many times where it's far more beneficial for a player to play through a small niggle, overcoming it through sheer mental toughness and smart recovery, than to "give up" and take a month off everytime they feel sore. Not to mention the experience they gain and possibility of avoiding a surgery that would sideline them for another period of several months.

It's a terrible shame that Cotchin will miss a few games and 4 months of fitness.

But it's also a shame that people can blame all our injuries on our medicos being incompetent! Injuries happen!

It's like labelling Brett Deledio a terrible kick because he missed 1 target, and then refusing to acknowledge the brilliance of all his other kicks.

I really hope Cotchin isn't going to turn into another Coughlan, almost unlimited potential, but never realised due to injury.

Don't curse him. ;)

Seriously all I want for the kid is for him to be able to have 1 full preseason... not too much to ask is it? :'(

Man, you are becoming just plain annoying.
Are you honestly trying to promote your views as more learned than the club's?
So you know the nitty gritty do you?
Give me a break - get over yourself pal. "SHEESH".
lol as it turns out my views are more learned than the clubs. some of us can afford to come on here day after day and carry on like pork chops when you are nearly always right.

so you used to be involved with the club eh. id keep that quite if i were you no one likes a loser. ;)

taking cotchins history with injury into consideration the position the club has found itself in again, plain old common sense said cotchin should not have been played but alas common sense goes out the window with some when people dare question what the club has done. just look at the dribble some on here have posted in defending the club at all costs. no never mind asking is it reasonable to question cotchins injury and the way hes been handled they obviously get everything right at richmond. please give me a break. go put your head back where the sun dont shine and pretend all is well.

oh and a big pat on the back to ya for your time at the club it must have been traumatic. a pat on the back now thats what you were after surely.

yeah a pat on the back is what he wants after the stellar job he and others did during the mid 80's well done.

for some the club can do no wrong which is reflected with the success we've had.

let's see cotchins got a problem with his hip and hasn't had a pre-season due to his achilles, finals chance is a distant memory and we have a caretaker coach in place, so what are the options - to play cotchin or to rest him. common sense would indicate to rest him, richmond sense would indicate the opposite.

It appears the recovery time may not be 4 months, that may have been the worst case scenario.

Spot on. PRE is becoming like a Zac Efron fan club.

Excuse my ignorance but who's Zac Efron, poop scoop?
Is he a skinny kid in the draft that we need to tank for - our saviour?

Our Luke Ball........face it we have a dud body on a superstar!! typical luck for the RFC

Do we know if it's a bone spur, Jason? There's an element of discretion if it is, I believe.

Which would explain playing Cotchin. He had been struggling a little. We could all see that. But it begged the question is it 2YB, injury or lack of preparation that's hurting him?

He found a bit of form a couple of weeks ago and I reckon most of us concluded that he was getting over anther missed pre/early season.

It's really important that we get this colt to the races every preparation. And we want a bit of form. It's crucial for his development. And, in 2009 we got that. Minimum goal achieved.

That said, if it turns out that he's chewed the cartilage out of his hip then we would be entitled to light our torches, assemble outside he cathedral, throw the monster in the cart and have a bit of fun.

On Grant Thomas. He is one of the stupidest people ever involved in the AFL. Which is like saying he's short for a jockey. Luke Ball had one play as a 19yo - the sledgehammer. He was 19, 80kegs and could get you five clearances in the first quarter with this play. Trouble was he was too light for it (therefore certain to succumb to injury) and he wasn't learning any other plays.

But Thomas kept letting him do it. The kid desperately needed time at HB to polish his game and get him out of action he was not ready for. Jimmy Bartel has been afforded this luxury and he's full grown. Oh and by the second worst coach in the history of the game - Mark Dumber Thompson.

Cotchin's case does not remind me of the Ball bungling example.

IMO if there's no lingering damage I reckon we probably pulled the pin on the Chimp's season at just the right time.

The more info that comes out the more this looks likely to be the case I reckon. The reports are that he should be ready for a full pre-season.

Eloquent, to the point, and entertaining.

we should ask mb64 forhis opinion as he appears to be a medical expert given the certainty he expresses his opinion on all things medical.
