Coughlan,s Status

I posted a similar thread last year, but I'm going to do it again just to remind my yellow and black bretheren EXACTLY what Coggs is worth when compared to his club peers in 2005;

Ist in Tackles, 1st in Handballs, 3rd in Disposals, 3rd in Kicks, 5th in Marks (off RFC player stats).

All that lot with both ankles crook and a limited preseason due to recovering from OP. Look out when he's fully fit and firing in 2006 coz another Jack Dyer medal beckons........RIP IT UP COGGA!!!!

Cog's is a gun and my fav player at Tigerland he Tuck & Johnson paid the price late last year for the work load they shouldered hopefully this year & in the future they all get a chop out with more guys rotated through & better quality outside players to take advantage of our ball winning ability this is where Deledio, Meyer, Tambling & CO come in. Cog's reminds me a bit of Ratten but bigger & stronger doesn't mind dishing out a good bump also.

I felt he really struggled last year as it was obvious his legs were stuffed. Those stats are quite amazing given the circumstances. Clearly he has great ability to get in amongst the action. My main concern was for how much longer he can keep up that style of play. So in a way I'm very happy to learn it was his ankles which were the main problem, rather than OP. Hopefully his operations were successful and he gets off to a flyer this season.

A fully reconditioned Coggs and a born again Rodan when added to Tuck and Johnson gives our engine room a helluva lot more potency.

Coughlan has plenty of time to develop into an elite midfielder - and he will if he can get his body right. I'm prepared to overlook his kicking in recent seasons considering the injuries he's carried. As for captaincy, I'd really like the club to pick somebody very vocal for once. Any player can 'lead by example'...you don't have to be captain to do so. Somebody who is genuinely inspirational and a good communicator. Probably few have noticed, but when he's onfield and in the huddles, Stafford is that bloke for us. I don't presume to know what's being said, but I really take notice in the past when Campbell and Johnson talk to the troops between quarters...people's heads are down and there is no real passion on the faces (and presumedly in the words) of our supposed leaders. When Stafford occasionally has his say it is obvious to me that EVERYBODY listens and that his ability to bring his passion to win into what he is saying commands respect and inspires players. It's won us games in the past and it will again. Brown has a little of these qualities too...

I'm not about to suggest Stafford as captain obviously, but I do think it's time we started better evaluating what makes a good captain. Quiet players who 'lead by example' don't make the best leaders IMO. Coughlan may turn out to be a player at a level above (for example) Rodan, but for mine Rodan would always make the better captain - he has obvious passion, is a good communicator and is very well liked by his peers. The fact that he will possibly never be among our best 3-4 players should be totally irrelevant - as long as a player is consistently performing well enough for senior selection why shouldn't they captain the side if they have better leadership qualities than the best few players do?.

Cogs is a star, no1 has doubted that.
As 4 leadership, hmm... don't entirely agree wif u there. Ur captain should b the person that has the respect of the players the coaches. Also have the ability to stand up in the crunch game/quarter. Wouldn't have said cambo was a loud person but no1 would have doubted his ability to captain the side!

So you think that Richie Vandenburg is a good captain then? :rofl

I think the coach & a good leadership group are far more important than a good captain. The role of a captain in footy is overated IMO, too many variables. It's predominately a media role.

Interesting points made there big fella........ some i agree with and some i dont. I am with you on the fact that a leader needs to be vocal and have a 'presence' amongst the group...... but they must lead by example and i think the most important asset of a captain is to stand up in crunch situations or 'lift' when the side needs it ala Riccutio.
On the Stafford point i must say i agree .... he does have a good relationship with the players and you can see the guys respect and like him..... he is by no means a captain but does possess good traits that you would want in a captain.

hahaha thats so funny, i was just thinking about your infatuation with joel as i read that post ;D

I think the last two games have seen Cogs get back to his best form (his B&F form). He is getting a lot of the ball again which has always been his trademark, the ball finds him. Am holding my breath that his body will stay right - he can haas proved do better still.

Cogs = captain? Not sure about that, while a natural choice if he has to spend his career nursing his body then the added pressure of being captain may not be what he needs.

Cogs is surely getting a bit of the leather, but needs to kick more goals, especially the punishing one from outside 50, no excuses.

Awesome game against the Dockers tonight Mark. :clap :clap
He was terrific last night Rosy. Some humble pie here ;).

Very pleasing to see Cogs back to that sort of form.
His workrate was through the roof and he was involved in everything.
He showed great leadership and really stood up, when some of our other senior players were missing.
Finally he is looking clear of whatever he's been carrying.

I look forward to the rest of his season with anticipation.
Well done Cogs, credit where it's due. :clap
