Now dont get me wrong I am a big Sugar fan and there is nobody who dos more of the ground then he but the time will come soon when the Captaincy will be moved on.Of course there is a few candiates Browny,Richo,Joel and Cogs.Browny would be first choice I suppose been VC but will turn 29 next year and suppose there is a question mark over him with fitness.Richo well hes just going to be to old by the time it comes up.Joel once again another who will turn 29 next year and whos too say the captaincy will come up next year, but we could do a lot werse then have Joel as our leader.Cogs though one of my favorites ,most in the know seem to think its not in his personality to be Captain, not to say he isnt going to be a great leader at the club but not a Captain. There of course are others around the club like Newman and co who may well step up to do the job but the more I see of the young man Deledio on and off the field the more I think he would/will make a great Captain. There is also the argument, Ala Saints of making guys Captains too young which I agree why put added presure on a young man finding his feet when not needed too.Maybe not next year but I think Lids is a very special young man, who like greats of the past will make a great leader at a young age.Intersted in people thoughts ,this is in no means saying Sugar isnt doing a great job

I would prefer he were allowed to develop without added pressure.

We mite want to look at St Kilda as an example

Obviously Hammill is the stand out captain, however Ball this year and Riewoldt last year were under extra pressure as captains and up and coming players

Wouldn't consider him as captain until a minimum of 23yo.
He has to fully develop his own game first.
He should have done this by 22yo, afterwhich he looks a very likely type.

I'm very reticent about these types of threads.
I remember that Sunday morning at the MCG for SOS back in about 1989 where Sean Bowden was called to the stage as the Tigers' future captain. I don't know if Sean even got to 10 games, but it sure as hell seemed as if it put the "mockers" on him.

Cough's (i think) would be a good leader as he leads by example on the field & has the respect from the players & coaching staff. Sticks Kernahan was made captain at a young age and coped well.Lid's would be a good deputy for cough's and over time could be groomed as our next captain. There's no doubting that one day Lid's will be skipper of the tige's,but i'd give it a couple of years for now  until he takes the role!!  GO THE TIGE'S

Reckon Kane is doing a good job, just hope his on-field form improves. I'd like to see him hold on to it till end of '07 and then step down for Coughlan, provided he is fit and playing good footy. Coughlan is a natural leader IMO and will be a good age to take over and lead us for 5+ years.

I'm a bit like Phantom, I really can't see why we should even be speculating on who our next captain is going to be until the time is right to be seeking one ( shame CC for starting this thread, shame ;D )

Having said that, I don't think you need to be conventional to be a captain so Cogs would get my seal of approval if he was interested.

Surely the line of successors to Kane begins with Joel Bowden.

Joel has three years left in him and I hope he captains for 2 then appoints a successor like Brisbane are doing with Voss and Brown. I actually really like the idea of a player being able to concentrate on himself during his last year, being able to make sure he get himself up and running. Also serves as a great sounding board for the new captain to bounce ideas off and help through that first year. Doesn't mean without the title of captain they are still not leaders. Look at Hird, Hamill,Voss and Cousins.

After Joel finishes you may have Cogs, Lids, or someone else may have emerged from the pack.

Let's just let Lids be the best he can be for a few years without burdening with the captaincy just yet.

Johnson -> Cogs -> Lids....lets start a new era with the young guys as our leaders.

...bowdo is the same age as johno so why would he give it to him?

Cogs in two years.

Our premiership line up ;)

C: Cogs
VC: Deledio, Newman
DVC: Tambling, Raines, Schulz

It's only a hyperthetical question.Beside's, we speculate on everything

I would like our next skipper to be someone that is hard at it also have a strong personality. Whereas over the last 20 years or more we have had some good skippers, yet they dont stand out as a leaders. Someone who can fire up the team when we are down, somebody who looks like they dont enjoy losing.
I just look at J.Brown at the lions, who I would think will be their next captain once Voss steps down. He just looks like the type of player that wont put up with mediocrity & shows this when he plays, its a take no prisoner attitude. I dont know if we have anyone with that killer instinct, yet it is something we desperately need.

Depends on how long Johnno has the job. Given a reasonable run with respect to injuries I would expect him to have the job until the end of next season.

From 2008 onwards the two most likely candidates are:-

1) Brown(assuming he has fully recovered)
2) Tuck(bred in the purple to lead by example)

quoting yourself there dave, good job  ;D

Yeah life would be boring without speculation.

too hard to pick the next skipper and way too early to be doing so. Suga will lead us until end of 2007, and will stand down for his final season as a player in 2008. Just like Campbo did. So our next skipper will be needed in 2008. By then a number of players will have stepped up and a few moved on.

deledio won't be our next captain because you can't name a 3rd year player as captain. i can't believe i'm saying this but i think JB is the man for 2007
