Apologies in advance for stirring up more unpleasant memories of recruiting gone horribly wrong; a bit like kicking a dog when its down.
But seeing the Tiges v Swans last week reminded me of an absolute shocker that most don't realise or remember.
I think it was back in 2004 that the Tiges had first pick in the pre-season draft.
In our wisdom (sob) we decided to pass up on picking any player from that draft, which just happened to include a promising defender from the Brisbane Lions in one Craig Bolton.
We looked at him but the word from our recruiting guru was that we had enough of his type of player, what with Gaspar, A.Kellaway and the like.
I suspect we weren't exactly loaded with cash to pay him which may have also influenced the decision, but of course if the club had recognised his potential I reckon the hat would have gone round pretty quickly.
History shows this All-Australian defender might have been a handy pick-up.

Was a midfield type at the time...we tried to get him ,he refused to come and priced himself accordingly, he only wanted to go to Sydney

ah mentioned this at the time 2003 psd pick 3. we had pick 2 and declined to use it molony went at 4 that yr. this is what happens when you dont resource your most important department properly.
i believe money did play a role in this as well. though i dont think trading for johnson and blumfield helped matters at all. and in saying this we could find shedloads to throw at brown at the end of 03.

We were told we didn't have the money. But I don't know. As I recall that was the year we tried unsuccessfully to get Lappin across from Carlton..so the bucks were there.

I think Bolton said he wanted to go to Sydney and Miller meekly backed off?

brent who went to geelong and was then traded to melb as part of the deal to get ottens to geelong and pick 12 to us.

Bolton would not be half the player he was if he came to our inept club.

Anyway he wanted to go to Sydney, was head hunted a long way out the former Ram.

The recruiting team at Brisbane knew about this from a long way out. ;)

I begged Greg to get him - via email of course ;D

If I remember Gaspar had gone down ...

Didn't they want Ray Hall ?

it doesnt matter what player we picked back then if we put them into our SYATEM and STRUCTURES they would fail or underperform
